Subject: Whining noise...any thoughts? IP: Logged
Message: Morning everyone. My 98 Dak has an odd noise. When driving I can hear a whining noise. Definately coming from the front, maybe front right but not sure. Anyway, the whine is really retectable at about 30 to 50 MPH. I get the noise when driving straight. If I turn the wheel the slightest bit to the left, the whine is gone immediately, but if I turn to the right it stays the same or maybe gets a little louder. If I put the truck in nuetral and coast, I get the same thing as stated above. I have also noticed that
I can feel a little bit of vibration in the floorboard drivers side on conjuntion with the whine. I am going to check the power steering fliud today. HELP HELP HELP

Message: Is the noise there when the car is idling? if so take belt off the powersteering pump and start the truck. If noise isnt there then replace ur pump or fill with fluid.read my post below too. "weezing coming from trans."

Message: The noise may be there when idling, but its barely noticable. I dont think its related to:
Transmission - because I shift transmission into Nuetral and I still get the noise, Brakes - because it will not change if pressure is applied to the brake pedal, Engine itself - it does not change with RPM. It does get louder with speed though. I was also thinking tire pressure, so I checked that and all is well. Power Steering Fluid is fine too. Any one else have any thoughts? Could I have some worn bearings?

Speaking more seriously now, I'd suspect the power steering pump. If it's going bad, the fluid level won't make a difference. They howl like crazy when the bearings are going out, and will cause a vibration that you can feel if it's bad enough. Might also check the rack and pinion steering shaft, if your year truck has one, and make sure that you have enough clearance between the wheels and front suspension parts if you've changed wheel/tire sizes.
