Hi, I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab w/ a 3.9 V6 5speed.
I have a 20' boat that the truck did a decent job towing when it was stock. I have since added a hellwig "helper spring" system to the rear leaf springs (which claim to increase towing/load capacity by 1000lbs), and a Gibson Dual Cat-Back exhaust.
Like I say, the truck does a decent job towing this beast, but its a little too slow accelerating with the boat hooked up, and it has somewhat of a difficult time maintaining cruising speeds around 60mph. I'd like to give it a little more oomph. Would a superchip or TB spacer help? Also, what other mods would help with towing (that's mostly what I'm interested in).

same configuration of truck i have except mine is an '00. i haven't towed anything with mine yet but i can see why you'd want to help the towing performance.
the superchips tuner is a good product. a few poeple on here have it and like it. don't bother with a TB spacer. if you have a 2wd gears would probably cost you close to the same as the superchips. you probably have the 3.55:1 gears and could go to either 3.92:1 or 4.10:1. personally with the 5spd i'd go with the 3.92:1. those 2 and you should be able to tow that boat much easier. add a v8 TB too.

As daddio said, gears are what you need. In my opinion the 3.55 gears are way to high for the powerband of the truck, stick or auto. Go with 4.10 for an auto and 3.92 for the 5 speed. You truck is already heavy without the boat hooked up.

hey, that is a great addition to an auto trans truck for towing. Jessie won't be able to use it though as he has a 5spd manual.
