Subject: Larry, MAG or LA???? IP: Logged
Message: Larry, you seem like a really knowledgable guy, along with several others here. Please everyone chime in. I'm just curious what the differences are between the 5.9L Magnum, and the older LA. Engine internals, not spec sheet info? Besides heads, I can't imagine too much else being that much different. Cam?

Message: I'll let Larry address the differences, although you can find all the info on www.allpar.com.
I think heads make the most difference between any two engines of the same size and model because their design controls both intake and exhaust flow and compression. On some engines different heads and matching pistons can deliver an increase of well over 100hp. So, I hope you are not minimizing the importance of different heads on the Magnum engines. Anyhow, check out that website for info on all Chrysler engines.

Message: Basicly the only diff
heads, intake and valve train setup
88 and up they went to the roller lifters
the mag than changed again from a rocker shaft
setup to a stud rocker setup
you can use crank and rods in either the pistons
are basicly the same except they moved the
ring lands a little
in 88 throttle body injection
in 92 multiport
thats about it all in all its the same motor
The V6 went the same way and is a 318 with 2
cyls cut off and was made just for the trucks
to replace the old slant 6 the V offered
better gas mileage over the old straight 6
allpar.com tells you everything they did
