Subject: Overheats on Hot Days IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1995 3.9L V6. The engine overheats in stop and go traffic on above 70 degree days. I have had the water pump, radiator, and thermostat replaced within the past 2 years and they are relatively new. I just replaced the thermostat last week and it still overheats. Any ideas? A friend said to check the fan clutch. How do I check it?

Message: Sounds like a plugged rad..... when you start to over heat... feel the top and bottom of the rad ..... if the bottom is cooler than the top .. then you need a new rad ...

Message: Whoa there.
In the "standard" configuration that we've all come to know and love, coolant from the engine enters the top of the radiator, and leaves the radiator at the bottom to go back into the engine.
Therefore, the bottom hose will usually be cooler than the top hose.

Message: Have you flushed and backflushed the system?
After a flush, I recommend approx 60% water and 40% antifreeze. AND add a bottle of Redline Water Wetter.
On a Dak that old, you could replace the clutch fan with a Black Magic electric fan.
I did, and it works great, and is quiet.

Message: replace the fan clutch...... in stop and go the fan comes in to play more..... if you cruise out the highway and it doesnt overheat then you know the cooling system is free flowing and not restricted so you dont have to waste your time flushing and back flushing anything.... you got a back fan clutch....

Message: Just replaced the radiator of my 98 3.9.
I did what Forseti said. Tore my knuckles all to pieces. Turned off engine. Seriously, the top 1/3 was hot.
The fan will be like mine and not work without hot air from the radiator.
Most radiator shops will test it for free.
By the way; overheat for me was the zero of 240. Knew it was hot because it never, ever got there before.

Message: The rads on the V6 are a single row radiatorbarn
has the 2 row for $130 free shipping and
fast delivery
The clutch fan is very important and if bad they
will over heat under 30mph
That is how I cure over heating and a good power
back flush, I have done this to so many V6 trucks
they run a lot cooler with the bigger rad it bolts
right in comes with the line adapter kit instaled
and is twice the cooling capasity
