Subject: Engine Idle Problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota, auto, V6 Ext. Cab. There is the following reoccuring problem. After starting the engine, idle and revved up in park is fine. As soon as the truck is put in gear it cuts out and dies. (Seems to be fuel but can not say for sure) After several attempts to start going it is fine even at an idle. The problem reoccurs on the next start-up. No check engine light coming on. If the battery is disconnected and then reconnected the problem goes away. This fix works for two to three weeks then is back. The problem stays until the battery is diconnected/reconnected again. Several new batteries have been tried since that originally appeared to be the fix until I realized that simply breaking the connection provided the same results. Anyone have a clue?

Message: To me, this sounds like a IAC issue. The IAC is mounted on the backside of the throttle body. I would inspect the wiring, make sure the connector plug is clean, also check to see if your spark plug wires are running on top of the wire bundle to the IAC.
You mention that you remove the battery cable, by doing this your resetting the computer.
You might be getting electronic noise. This is a long shot..... but I have seen even more bizaar things.
I would suggest that you carefully remove the IAC unit and clean the carbon deposits off of the plunger (careful, do not rotate the plunger)
also clean the housing that the IAC sits in.
To remove the IAC you will need a short Torx driver #25 or 35 I dont remember. I have an 00' v6 Dak and have had to do this twice. The first time I was not so thorough. So take your time and be thorough. you should notice an improvement right away.

If it ain't broke, your not trying!
