Subject: High Idle/Computer no help IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. Well, I had my dakota put on the computer yesterday and it said that my temperature sensor was bad. It said that my truck was running at like 70 degs. celsius which equals out to about 158 degs F. Now I do have a 180 thermostat in it right now that I just put in recently. However, it began the high idling before i went from the 195 down to the 180. The mechanic told me that with the sensor bad, it was telling the computer in my truck that the engine wasn't getting warm enough. Now, i changed out the temp sensor and it still did it. Should I go back to the stock 195 and see what its doing or should I just leave it. Sounds to me like the computer didn't help me at all. It's prolly back to the first theory of a vacuum leak which I really wish wasn't the problem. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks.........

Message: Thanks. Yeah, I replaced the PCV valve in it today because i heard that could maybe have something to do with it. It was only like $4 anyways so its not a big deal. Now its idling a tad lower and its beginning to try and idle itself down. I can hear it faintly try to idle normal. I'll mess with it tomorrow. I hope resetting it will do it. Thanks.

Message: Nope, reset the computer, nothing. I dunno whats next to check out. Hmmm. Maybe since the computer said the engine wasn't gettin up to normal operating temperature, ill but the 195 thermostat back in it. I should anyways because its averaging about -5 to +5 degrees here right now. Sucks. That 180 isn't exactly blowin out hot air.

Message: Try a different thermostat...maybe you got a defective one and it's opening too early?

Message: First off what year is the truck. Next I dont believe the temp sensor was ever the prob. Normally when they go bad they will kind of default themselves to sasy that its like -40 or some crazy reading. The reading that you said about actually sounded about right. Take a can of brake or carb cleaner and spray around the intake etc. see if the idle changes. I need to know the year of the vehicle so i can futher help ya out. Let me know on the vacuum leak test

Message: Well, I and among others have sprayed around for a vacuum leak and no1 can find it. The truck is a 1990 Dakota 4x4 3.9L TBI. I'm ready to send it to the garage to get looked at but I know damn well that they will pound me with hourly charges.

Message: Im not real sure on those TBI but just check and see if you have a IAC motor (idle air control) should be somwhere on the throttle body. That could be bad or stuck or somthing of that sort, but im not positive on location of it, should be on the thorttle body. If its there take it off and clean it, there might be some carbon or somthing on it. Let me know

Message: Hey guys, I put fuel injector cleaner in then filled the tank and now the idle kinda has a mild surge to it. Up and down. I dont know whats goign on with it. Could it be that the injectors are just dirty. Maybe i should clean them? Put more fuel injector cleaner in it next time i put gas in it?? What do you guys think?? Thanks for the help so far....

Message: Look on top of the TB at the back. You will see this depression. This is where the IAC valve sets a plunger into the TB for the idle speed.
Run the truck with the AC on, you should see a small air gap around a round blunt nose plunger tip in this depression.
The IAC controls the idle speed by moving this plunger in and out from the TB.
Now turn off the AC, truck fully warm.
Look again at that plunger, the tip should be fully seated into the TB now. If not they cost about $45 at the auto parts store.
If you still have a high idle problem after this you have a real problem. Look at the other recent TB post I made about adjusting the set screw on a TB swap I did.

Message: Alright I will try that. By AC do you mean air conditioning? I don't have that. I wish I did but i'm not that lucky. Thanks for the help....

Message: This is a long shot, but it is something you could do and does not cost you any money. Sometimes your MAP sensor can get condensation in it and well cause your motor to rev to high or to low(this should cause a code 13 to come up). All you need to do is pull the sensor out and let it sit inside over night, preferably by a heat register and this will get rid of any moisture in the sensor. When you put it back in, let it sit for a while to get to what ever temp it is outside or your truck will run really funny for the first 20 minutes or so. I think in a 1990 the MAP sensor is located on the firewall passengers side. It has a big vacum line going in on one side and a plug with three wires coming out the other side. Hope this helps
