Subject: Problem with my 96 Dakota/Fuel pressure? IP: Logged
Message: Hi my truck is a 1996 Dakota auto 2 wheel drive with a 3.9. It's always had this intermittent stalling/stumbling and backfiring problem. Since the truck is under warranty from the dealer I got it at, I had a new timing chain with tensioners put in. I did a complete tune up including plugs wires cap/rotor coil PCV valve and air filter. It has run better, but it still stalls out when started. A friend of mine told me to check the fuel pressure. So I went to the hoby shop on base and paid $1.25 to use the gauge there, and I only got 36-38 PSI out of the pump at idle. My Haynes manual says that the fuel pressure is different in 1996 than the earlier years, and I should have 44-55 PSI. Also, with just key on and not starting the engine, the pressure would go up to around 20-ish PSI and then drop off to zero. Since my pressure is that low, could this be a culprit? It also doesn't feel as strong on the highway as it used to.
Thanks guys!
Kevin

Message: You have a leaky injector..
probably best to replace all of them..
Fuel pressure should stay up even overnight..
The 36-38 is OK / although if should be higher
the leaky injector is letting it away..
