Subject: State Inspection in TX, Harris County!!

I just got my 2001 QC state inspected in Brazoria County, which is just south of Harris County (Houston, TX.). They passed some pis ant laws recently, and this year, all surrounding counties, have to meet the emissions standards of the county Houston is in.

ANYWAY....

I asked, and if you have an OBD 2 vehicle, all thay do is hook up the communications port, and DON'T put the rod up your azz, the tailpipe!

So, with my 01, 4.7, with three cats, and NO o2 sensors after the third cat, I know which will be coming off soon!

01, 4.7, the 5spd you have to shift, HO cams, HO intake, ported 68mm TB, NO belt clutch/fan, Home brew air intake with K&N, (true CAI), AIT adjuster, LSD, Heater water bypass, 3923's, Mobil 1,

AND SOON TO LOOSE MY THIRD CAT!!!!!

Last year I heard 17 states are now testing in this manner, with more expected to follow.

That's how they test in Las Negas, NV.

Now all we need to do is figure out an OBD2 simulator that goes in place of the diagnostic port in the vehicle. Some type of microprocessor that would store and send bogus information to the emission nazi's.

Oh, so you think your talking to the computer in my vehicle. WRONG! your talking to the OBD2 simulator which will feed you any info needed to pass emissions.

No need - if the MIL light works, they're just looking for codes - prevent codes from setting with a cat box, and you're all set. Doesn't actually read emissions.

Congrats TexasTodd;
Welcome to the lost 3rd cat crowd. Thats another reason I love living in NW Florida, no state inspection.

Later man...

I hope many of you didn't miss my pint of my original post.

On my 01, 4.7, there are NO o2 sensors before and after the third cat! Therefore, removing the last cat inline, will do nothing to the current OBD2 codes.

As a sidenote, I've read that it only helps with the richer start up gasses anyway, I guess that's why the left it out of the puter loop.

I also thought, that if you had a MIL light on, which I didn't, that you could just reset and go to inspection, and a code wouldn't be on there.

That would probably work most of the time; but they will actually test a random few and one thing they will be looking for then will be a recently reset light. I mentioned the cat boxes for those with different set ups than ours,Todd - they should find this info useful too. I wonder if we could get a list going of states that test like this - so far we have Texas, Mass., & Nevada.

Montgomery County is making me test this year also. (Actually have to do it this month.) For OBDI they stick the sniffer in though.

Don't forget that emission testing laws change more often then some people's underware... Yesterday was a safety check, today it's an OBD-II check, tomorrow may be a sniffer or an additional visual check.

Just a few years ago, the law was to make sniffer tests in Houston and the surrounding counties. They even built some of the places to do it, then public reaction caused then to back away and those places are now welding shops, gas stations, etc.

Laws change, watch your mods, and CYA...

Hey Lurkin,

Maybe we can work on this one together again! I got a friend with a cool cutting tool, similiar to a dremel, but for cutting.

Click the envelope with your thoughts on this one.
