Haha if i saw a civic do it i'd say WTF too. And as for the track, I see cars do this all the time at the autox, in broad daylight... STI's, Evos, Volvos, they all seem to do it.
As for stoich, there is a difference between chemically stoich and 'tuned' stoich. Tuned stoich is considered by most to be 14.7 A/F. THIS IS NOT PERFECTLY CHEMICALLY BALANCED! It is slightly on the rich side. Anybody with a chemistry degree should understand that you cannot possibly burn all the fuel in the cylinder at sub-detonation flame velocities, gasoline simply does not burn that fast (especially high octane gas). If you ran your car on a theoretically balanced mixture, it would be detonating, and that's not fun. This is why we run single-use rocket engines lean, much more power at much higher temps, but it doesn't need to last. But for a car, some fuel must come out unburnt, in any petrol engine. Now deisel on the other hand... that's a whole nother story

Ever seen a funny car? Would you say that they are not propperly tuned? Tell that to their mechanics...
I do agree with the fact that you should never see flames coming out of a NORMAL cars pipes.

I said at the track I've never seen any cars with FULL EXHAUST shoot flames.

Funny cars have like what, 18 inches of pipe, Alcohol fuel, special exhasut valves, superchargers, lots of computer controls, etc etc etc.
I don't even think they shoot flames exceot for right when they let off the gas.

If I saw a car on the STREET do it out the tail pipe, I'd STILL say what a P.O.S. Even if it IS a turbo volvo LOL!!!

Graphite, you and I have something in common, here in Toledo I got in a real pickel about 27 years ago for doing the same thing, I was runnin a 73 Charger SE with a DirectConnection "formula engine" ( you buy this that and the other part, bolt in on and dial in it in and this is how much power you have) and blowing up my exhaust and flaming just like you did. I ended up one night with 3 cars chasing me downtown one nite just cause thay did not like the way I "flamed" them had my angel on my shoulder though, the cops got in on the chase and I was the only one that got away. Usta be really funny though when I would be driving along on a 4 lane and some moron would be "parked" in the passing lane and holding up traffic. It would wake them up right quick, and make the ladies scream in surprise.

ok, just a few thoughts. a fuel funny car runs nitro, with an alky mix. (90% nitro, to be exact.)
and yes they most surly spit flame, this is due to the fact that the nitro is actually seperating the hydrogen from the air from the intense heat.
no special valves either. and uh, there are no Computer controls on a f/c either. plenty of data logging, and clutch air sensing, but the engine is all mechanical. for what a fuel motor is capable of, they are extreamly unsophisticated. there is your top fuel lesson of the day. oh yea, quick question, how many gears are in a top fuel powerglide?

next, some of you seem like you have never been around any kind of race car. any trans-am car will spit flame , full exhaust. now that i think about, 85% of road race/ auto-x cars will spit flame. if you need an explanation on why, well its simple. what volvo said about injectors running at their peak duty cycle has alot to do with it. its also caused by the fact that they drop gears quickly coming into a corner, and quickly load the engine. thats the basic way of putting it.

oh yea, and somebody should smack the kid that started this post.

thanx
