Subject: PCM swap? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, I know this is proboly an old topic. But here goes.
Are PCM's for identicle years and models interchangable??
I wanna send a comp to M.Leach, and swap it when it gets back. Gonna be a while cause its gotta travel cross country.
Sooooooooo.... what you saying?

Message: Assuming same exact transmission and engine it might be possible. However, the Vin won't match( just gives dealers a headache) and the PCM might not be fully flashed and updated for your truck. Otherwise it should work fine with no problems assuming that in the model year in question there wasn't production split in which case you might be out of luck.

Message: Up to '95 it's no biggie, but as already stated, the OBDII units will not function properly unless coded with your VIN.

Message: Not neccesarily true, but you could have problems. I ran a boneyard PCM in my OBDii truck with no problems at all; but that is not to say you couldn't have problems. Mismatched vin and no trouble codes - everything ran perfect. I think those who will be most likely to have a problem is when one or both PCMs are from a truck with the factory alarm system.

Message: Clarification. The anti-lock/speed sensor issues/shifting may not function properly. The big boys claim this, but it may be nothing more than a smoke screen to keep people from doing it. Never really made sense to me other than the possibility of odometer fraud somehow.

Message: Makes us wonder, doesn't it ? Mine shifted fine - drove it a couple weeks to be sure it was ok, then sent my PCM off to be flashed. Glad I wasn't desperate for a quick turnaround - UPS sent my flashed PCM to Alaska instead of Mass.

Message: The VIN in the PCM will not keep it from working in another vehicle. The security system may. If the original owner has a factory security system, the PCM will work work in a truck that does not have the security system. If the buyer has the security system the PCM will work. I've have a used VIN flashed pcm that works in my 99 Durango. Both of us had the security system. I've tried my stock PCM in a non security system equipped vehicle, and it does not work. I've also tried a non security equipped PCM in my truck. (Dan Arcand aka Fastman) Thank goodness I did not activate the alarm The security system is not in the PCM (the same part number works for both) but something gets set in the PCM when it is activated. This has gone around and around. I read from others on Dodge forums who have come to the same conclusion that it is the alarm feature.
Note this is not talking to those who have the security key. I'm not sure what year that was introduced. I have the fob activated alarm.
The ABS should not be affected. Again, the Mopar PCM does not have different part number for four wheel ABS vs 2 wheel.

Message: okay.. so taken into account, that my vehicle is a 2000 4.7 auto RWD, with no alarm... getting a PCM with the same characteristics w/ or w/out an alarm should NOT cause any problems and should drive just as well as the original PCM.
could I get a YE, or a NE on this.

Message: That's a very useful tidbit Kowalski. I've been wondering about this issue since I got my engine...came with harness and OBDII PCM. Figured it was just junk to me, but it may be useful after all later on. Thanks.

Message: Yes Tim, it should as long as it is for the same v6
engine. You can check the part number on your
computer and compare that to the one you want to
swap in.
