Subject: Swaping to carb setup on a R/T IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone done this? How hard would it be and what is needed.
I know carb and intake manifold and probally a dis. with vacuum. Whould anything need to be done to operate the tranny. Or do you just fab the linkage to work with the carb. Or will the computer preak out being there will be no injectors or map sensor and so forth?

Message: Yes...the PCM will not operate the tranny with out the other sensors in place.
The only way to compensate is to use an old school transmission that relies on fluid pressure to make the shifts.

Message: You're gonna have a ton of work ahead of you.
The biggest problems will be with the computer.
The old days of just swapping out a drive train
are over. Today you have to be a engineer. Good
one also.
Lotta luck to you.

Message: mopar performance makes an intake manifold for the magnums that will accept a 4 barrel. I would think that if you throw in a 727 and do that you may as well gut the computer and basically rewire it I dont think it would be to bad of a job to do. but your right you will need a distributor that will do vacuum advance.

Message: If your wanting to swap out to a carb/manifold set up you are looking for plenty of work, trial and error. I found a website, www.hughesengines.com, that has barrel intakes and throttle bodies that may be worthwhile looking into. I plan on making some improvements on my '97 Dakota 5.2, and that's probably where I will go for the parts.

Message: I dunno. It seems like it would be do-able with a little electronic trickery. I'm toying with this now, looking at fooling my computer to think all is well. This will help. TPS remote mount.

I'm thinking of something like this using the remote TPS idea on my system. The MAP sensor can be plugged into the intake manifold, or plumbed to the matching vacuum port on the carb. That leaves what? Misc. temp sensor? Granted this is just a quick glance, but it seems to me the system could be fooled with a little time and effort. Tie in one of those O2 sensor Simms to fool the computer. Haven't done it, but I'm headed that way with my simpler, but similar gen1dak system...just to get the computer to handle the overdrive operation. Otherwise, you'd need a pre-'96 tranny with an on/off switch plumbed in to activate the overdrive. Those OBDII systems are so tight, you'll probably lose instruments and anti-lock...no telling what else, if you try to just cut out the computer.
