Within the last 2 months my 2001 Q.C. has developed a vibration. It starts at around 40 m.p.h. and does not stop. There is also a noticable "clunk" noise when i lift off the gas at lower speeds and the truck downshifts. Help please!!!

Check the U-joints and see if the driveshaft is in balance, both will cause an obnoxious vibration. Loose U-joints will cause a clunking noise and vibration while the driveshaft will only cause vibration.

lol,

I had the same clunking noise, but, only when you go over bumps, The dealer said, it was normal for 4-wheel drive, This is bull.

Finally, it got so bad, that my steering shifted from bump to bump, They finally found the problem. It was a loose nut on the passenger side upper A-arm.

Now, your problem might not be this, but, if it is your cv joints, go into a parking lot and turn to the right and then left (do circles). If, you hear a clunking noice, consintrate on wheather it's the left or right. This will tell you which cv joint is bad.

If, you get no noise, goto a dealer and get the torque specs for the front suspensions and just make sure everything is tight.

Also look for a torn boot on the CV joint. They go bad when they loose the grease, torn boots need to be replaced promptly.

How many miles are on the truck?

Is it 4wd?

Have you serviced the differential(s) routinely?

Are you sure the clunk is new or are you just tuned in to the noise because of the vibration?

Chrysler are notorious for having noisy differentials!

Put the truck in neutral, on a level surface, with the parking brake on and slide under the rear. You can probably reproduce the noise your hearing just by grabbing the driveshaft and turning it back and forth or just bumping it with your palm.

If you are getting alot of noise...

First... Check the universals for play. If there is "slop" in the u-joints you found your problem. This will cause a vibration and clunk.

Grab the rear yoke and try wiggling it from side to side or up and down. If there is ANY play, your pinion bearings are worn and your hearing the pinion load and unload in the housing. This will also cause the vibration and clunk!

If there is no play there, you may need to pull your rear diff cover and check the condition of your ring and pinion, and look for excessive amounts of material. If the gears look good and there isn't a metal fur ball on your magnet, you'll have to chock the front tires, put the transmision in gear and get the rear tires up in the air to check your backlash. It shouldn't exceed 10 thousandths. This will cause a clunk and roaring noise but usually not a vibration.

If everything checks out OK, you may have a driveshaft out of balance. This will cause a vibration but not a clunk.

Hope this helps!?!?!

My truck has 57,000 miles on it.It is a 2001 Quad Cab/4wd. I tried something the other day. I got it up to around 65 and put into Neutral and let it coast. It still vibrated. It seems to vibrate worse in colder temps. Thanks for all the answers. i'll give each of them a shot and see what works.

Puting it in neutral will only tell you the vibration isn't coming from the transmission. The driveshaft is still spinning when you coast. It sounds like a drive shaft. You could have a bent/twisted rear axle, but I doubt if that's the problem. You can't go wrong with replacing the u-joints. Nothing $50.00, a 12-pak of Bud, and a Sat. afternoon won't fix. The drive shaft may need rebalancing. Check to make sure the balance weights haven't been knocked/thrown off.

I have the same problem with my R/T except it only does it between 80-85mph. RIGHT WHERE I LIKE TO DRIVE!!! I haven't fixed it because it makes me drive under 80mph. At 75mph it's fine. At 90 plus MPH it's fine. I'm sure it's my driveshaft.
