Subject: Mileage drop after flush IP: Logged
Message: I don't know if it's just me, but I was averaging about 14.8 mpg in my dakota until I got the engine flushed it's at about 38K right now. Now it averages about 13.9 and finally at about 14.1, or at least that's what my console told me. I haven't changed anything drastically as far as driving, i also had the differential fluids changed or something like that. Forgive my lack of mechanical knowledge. Just seeing what you guys think. Thanks.

Message: it seems with the 4.7 that if you change anything, air intake, exhaust, flush, filters, or even the oil.... it drops in mileage. This engine is one of the most annoying motors i have ever owned. I can recall getting 17.8 mpg out of my 4.7 4x2 ext cab 2002 on a regular basis with mostly city driving. Now I get 12.4 mpg. People tell me its normal to have over 5 mpg drop... I say the motor is a POS and wish i got a 5.2.

Message: What Mr Sleepy has to say is nonsense. I find the 4.7 to be one of the best motors I have ever run, and that includes several 318s. Anyone claiming a 5 mpg drop is normal is also talking nonsense. That milage sounds about right for your truck - I have a similar truck - one year older, slightly lighter regular cab, and get 15 mpg. Changed to HO cams and got a custom PCM flash - still 15 mpg. Your front drive parts are always in motion and will cause some drag even when not using 4x4. These trucks take 5w30 oil. A heavier oil might give you slightly less mpg, or synthetic oil could give you a little better mpg. Other than that, an oil change WILL NOT affect mpg. Overhead console mpg estimates are notoriously inacurate. Try checking your milage the old fashioned way, and look for differences in fuel or your driving style.

| Amsoil - Engine Flush - Better MPG IP: Logged
Message:
A proper engine flush should result in more power, engine smoothness, and overall better general response out of an engine. I have witnessed situations whereby vehicles obtained between 1 to 2 miles per gallon better gas mileage after cleansing the engine. Why ... it's simple ... the engine can operate at peak performance.
Fuel Economy
Migs stated in the opening post: "14.8 mpg in my dakota until I got the engine flushed ... Now it averages about 13.9 and finally at about 14.1. Those are minor differences ... and let's remember that fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge.
If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that. Same holds true for colder weather, whereby it will seem like you got the same or less MPG than when compared to warmer weather.
Also, the pump may have stopped pumping later one week compared to the last, making it "seem" like you used more (or the same) gallons of fuel.
Different driving conditions per tank full also makes a difference.
For the Record, It has been proven by AMSOIL (and others), through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers, that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).
Also, I've observed a MPG increase when switching to lower grades (5w-30 compared to 10w-40).

Message: you also loosen a lot of sludge that does not come out, Steve ol' buddy will you replace my engine when a great big gob of sludge that come loose after the flush eventually works loose and plugs my oil pump tube intake screen like what happened a year ago USING AMSOIL PRODUCTS and AMSOIL already refused to cover???. NO??? I thought not! If it ain't broke don'y fix it. Never again will I use ANYTHING by dammitallamsoil, their crap ruined one of my engines and they won't cover it, they ain't gettin another chance.

| Amsoil defends Amsoil Engine Flush IP: Logged
Message:
Any engine flush, from any manufacturer, should not
be viewed as a "cure all" for over sludged engines.
Most engine flush kits are to be used only as a "wash" ---
--- to clean and remove light conventional motor oil deposits ---
--- so that the engine offers more power, engine smoothness,
and overall better general response.
Engine Flushes contain cleaning agents that dissolve and disperse harmful deposits formed in the crankcase, cylinder walls, pistons and rings of an internal combustion engine. When used as directed, it cleans and restores operating efficiency to valves, valve lifters, rocker arms, and pistons for improved horsepower, fuel economy, and performance.

I have heard and read a few posts whereby people "flame" me and/or Amsoil --- blaming one or both of us for various problems not associated with Amsoil products.
Usually the problem is not the fault of the manufacturer --- but the fault of the consumer --- just like when McDonalds was not the cause of the little old lady burning her leg with coffee.
Sorry lady, but coffee is supposed to be served hot.

Amsoil Engine Flush?
I have yet to see it cause problems.
However, I would be carefull with any flush if you feel that the sludge buildup in an engine is very large, --- in this situation it could clog your oil pump screen. If anyone has heavy sludge buildup --- they should consult a professional.
Repeat: No engine flush is a "cure all" for sludged engines. It is a "wash" to improve engine performance, and is used to clean and remove conventional motor oil deposits prior to switching to synthetic oil in high mileage vehicles.
***** Note: When flushing an engine, it is recommended that consumers install a new oil filter. You could develop a problem such as the one mentioned above --- because there is no completely empty "waste basket" to catch all of the deposits that any Engine Flush will clean out of your engine. An oil filter already in use is probably already dirty and the amount of deposits (crud or sludge) removed during the flush might cause the filter to allow overflow thru the by-pass valve. This potential problem can easily be avoided by installing a clean filter before you flush.

Message: When I had my oiled changed and I have it changed every 3K miles(mr duno), they told me that it was recommended to get your engine flushed after 30K so i had it flushed. That's the main reason, it probably is too small of a drop to blame on anything. I appreciate the helpful comments though.
