Subject: Just A Few Questions IP: Logged
Message: I have a bit to ask so here goes. First off, i want to know if i should spend money in a swap, i love the r/t and big strokers but i can keep up with an ext. cab r/t on his bed or just tune my V6, it getting faster I dont know how. My friend says Im breaking it in. I put oversized cobras on it and that thing spins them like there is no tomorrow when I launch. It never did that with factory tires. I even lanched lower just to see, but I still have this problem. Which brings me to this, that how do i find out if i have posi or can i get the ecm program to engage the other tire all the time. It has done that before, but not often. If i dont have true posi how do i find out my axle size and all to find the right rear end? Any help with be greatly appreicated. Thanx

Message: Not sure I got all the questions,
Look in the glove box at the sticker in there, it should say what rear end it has.
Also, When you burn out, lay a scratch, spin the tires, what ever, do they both leave some marks at the same time? If so, you have a posi rear end, simple as that. Uh oh, here goes some flames....

Message: Most of the time, its just leaves the right tire mark. But in a few cases both tires leave a mark. What do you think?

Message: The way it was described to me for a standard rear end is that power is delivered somewhat evenly, but when one tire starts to sping faster than the other i.e. turning, then the power is transfered to the outside tire.
before my LSD was installed I could aslo spin both tires, to test it I would get in some loose dirt or gravle and drive in somewhat of a figure 8. Spinning the tires in the turns.
you could then go back and look at your tracks and see when both spun and when just one spun.
After the LSD was installed I could not only see the difference in the tracks but feel the difference as well.
as for the spinning tires there are alot of things to factor. If you are using a higher mileage tire then they will not stick as well and therefore spin easier. also if the tire is overinflated there will be less tire making contact therefore have less resistance to spin.
I used to play with the tire pressure on my motorcycles ( less pressure for wheelies, more for burnout).
As for the ECM question, I don't know of any mod for posi. (more of a mechanical part that gets installed in the rear differential.)
Although I do remember reading a post a few weeks ago about a trani shift mod. you might search the forums for that, I could be wrong but I think GraphiteDak posted it. It basicly made a push button for easy (street) shifting, and hard (race) shifting.
Good luck and keep the questions coming. Thats how we all learn.

Message: An open diferential can still light up both tires in lower traction situations. That's what you have. Even if you had the "LSD" or "sure grip" rear you wouldn't have "true posi" - that's a GM term for their version. A way to test is to jack up the rear, and turn one tire by hand. If the other tire turns in the same direction, that's LSD. Opposite direction - open rear.

Message: i'll try that kowalski. Jaggy, i have Cobra GT's on my stock 15 rims. The tires hang over the rims, cause I got ones that are wider than the stock rims. I can have 20psi and it spins, just the right side. But if i burn out long enough it will start to turn the left. But in the dirt both tires spin easly. You think my rear end if messed up or just plain acting funky?
