Message: Does anyone know how big of a difference it is switching to a electric fan? Also i does anyone have any helpers on how i can add traction when off the line )besides getting new tires)....i burn through like 2 whole gears. Would retarding my boost and punching it then turning it back up once im going help? thanks

Message: The electric fan adds what? 10 - 15hp, not bad for an easy switch. BUT it sounds like you've got plenty of hp allready :)) What kind of rearend you got in that thing... Limited slip or posi will help a lot with tire spin if you allready don't have it... Also ever thought about starting out in a higher gear? I know a few newer vettes and cobras that will get better track times simply by starting in a higher gear for just the simple reason that these machines will do just as yours and roast the tires right off the rims before it really gets going good ; )) Might want to try shifting that thing into 2nd if auto and starting there or starting your manual off in second or you can simply change your rearend out for some higher gears... Atleast that way you won't roast your tranny or clutch :)) Just something to think about I guess...

Message: It's called....WORK ON YOUR LAUNCH TECHNIQUE. Ease into the throttle. Going to stiffer gearing will help as well (stiffer meaning numerically lower).
Agreed, if you don't an LSD , you need one. If you want to detune your ignition, it will decrease low-end torque, but unless you have a programmable setup, you'll likely fubar re-advancing the advance in the heat of the run. You'll gain about 5hp with electric fans. Mopar did the same thing with the '89 Shelby Dak, and rated it 5hp more than belt-driven fan models.

Message: He said it's an R/T. R/T's come with LSD......
You need better tires. The side walls of the 55's are too stiff for drag racing. The 4.7L Sport has bigger tires than the R/T. They are bigger in diameter anyway. Some even have wider tires. My 2002 came with 265/65/16's. You can let a little air out of those tires and they hook up twice as good as the 255/55/17's on the R/T. Find a cheap set of 15x8 Dakota Sport wheels and slap some 295/65/15's on them. They are 1" taller than the R/T's tires and 1.5"wider. The key here is the side walls. The side wall of the 295/15's is 7"tall vs. the R/T's 5.5". That extra height allows the sides of the tire to rap more and this acts as a cushion or damper between the torque coming from the rear axle going to the ground.
The R/T's wheels and tires are better suited for cornering than off the line traction.

Message: so the r/t's do come stock with the lsd? are the r/t rims 17x9? i could fit a wider tire on there then on 8's so why don't i keep them...even though they are mad heavy! is it hard ot switch to the electric fan?

Message: Yeah, they have LSD, but that's not saying much. They don't take much abuse. They are pretty weak. If you do a lot of burn outs and power turns where you punch it while turning you will cook the disk out of the clutch-pack in the LSD. They are OK for the "once-in-a-blue-moon" burn out. If you intend to really thrash your R/T then you need a better locking rear end. LSD is 60's technology.

Message: You'll know when it starts to go. When you make a turn and accellerate the rear end will chatter. Also, just pull over on the side of the road when the grass is wet. Drop the right side tires over on the grass. DO NOT FLOOR IT!!! Just give it an agressive mid throttle punch. If the tire on the grass spins you have problems. If it tries to grab and it chatters you might be able to flush out the gear oil and change it with the expensive stuff. It should spin slightly and once the heat in the disc builds up it should grab and take off with little or no drama. If you have a concrete drive way just put some soapy water on the right rear tire and goose it a couple of times. If the right rear spins and the left rear never grabs then your LSD is TOAST.

Message: So if the LSD is toast, what would be the best thing to do, to avoid the situation again? Rebuild the rearend or get a better locking rearend. What are some good brands of locking rearends? Thanks.

Message: Detroit Locker makes one called the "Detroit Truetrac". It has no clutches to burn out. It uses helical cut gears (strongest design for a gear) that slide back and forth on another gear to effectively change the speed of the inside and outside rotating tires. It is expensive and I'm not sure if they have one for the 9.25 rear end on the R/T. They make one for the 8.25 in the 4.7L Jeep Grand Cherokee. There are other manufactures that make similar units. They have been out for about 10 years now. Why they still put LSD's in new trucks is beyond me. They might as well go back to drum brakes and carburetors if they are going to stick an LSD in the diff.

Message: If money isn't an issue use a "Detroit Soft Locker". It is the closest thing to a solid differential that still allows both tires to rotate at different speeds when cornering. It is a heavy duty piece that fits the 9.25. It's about twice as expensive as the "Truetrac". It's about $690.00.
Go to www.drivetrainsuperstores.com and they have them. Just follow their menu. They have a really good, fast, user friendly menu. I plan to get one soon for my R/T.

Message: Well, the Detroit TrueTrac is about half the cost of the "Soft Locker". I have not seen this piece in a street/strip application. It's supposed to be real good. A simular design is what's in the 2004 NeonSRT4. Detroit is the only one I know making these for Dodges. I'm sure someone else has them.

Message: gen1dak,
Dude, I'm sorry for that smug statement I made a few days ago about the LSD. OK? You are with out a doubt the most knowledgeable person on this forum when it comes to all Dakotas. I was sort of shocked that no one including you was aware that LSD was standard on R/T's.....
I still have a lot of Military in me. I forget to be tactful and tasteful with my remarks sometimes. 16 years of bullsh!t ground into my head. I regret saying a lot of things. You compose yourself very well. Keep up the good work.
