BUT, just try to find a discussion group for '81 - '93 full size 2wd trucks!

I have a '93 D150 with a 5.9 Magnum and 5 spd manual trans. What mods will give me plenty of low end torque? I want this truck to feel like it has a big-block in it.

Thanks!

I've heard it's difficult to squeeze out low end torque on the magnum motors. Look around on some old post to see if anyone has any tips. Good luck!

Have you completed any modifications yet?

First thing is to do a tune up. It sounds silly, but most people need to do a tuneup. It will help you regain any lost power and help you get the most out of additional modifications. Make sure your injectors are clean also.

I like to do the free, cheap and easy mods first. Look for inlet restrictions. A high flow air filter is a good start. I'd leave the exhaust alone since a restrictive exhaust will (to an extent) help low end torque.

You may want to look for low end torque in your differential gearing. Heading toward 3.92 or 4.11 or higher will definately help you in that department. Remember to have your speedometer/odometer adjusted. Tire diameter also can play a role with this.

Low end torque? Try a set of HO cams, sure helps the 4.7's low end torque!

And YES, I'M JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

A 5.9, looking for low end torque? Kinda sounds like one in the same thing you'd think from the way people talk about the torque of their 5.9's! LOL

A 5.9, with a 5spd, wow. People are reading your post drooling over that!

Is it one of those 727 trannies?

Start with what they said about reducing your intake restrictions. After that get a cat back exhaust for your truck and while you are at it a new cat, unless you recently replaced it. That will give you an increase across the board, hp and tq. Keep the manifold on they help with back pressure.
If you are willing to spend some money get a torque blower for your truck.

TexasTodd, IntenseDak39,

I can't quite figure out if you really think a 5spd behind a 5.9 is cool or whether you think I'm full of crap or don't know what I'm talking about.

I bought this truck because I thought it was cool and I thought it would make a good hot rod / tow vehicle. I figure it's gotta be rare - last year for the old body, first year for the 5.9 Magnum, AND with a NV4500 trans.

EBL,
Thanks for the tips. I haven't started on the truck yet, but a tune-up (along with a full resto of the underhood) will be the first thing to get done. Some sort of air filter swap will also get done then. I'll probably stick with the 3.55 gears since first gear in the NV4500 is pretty low (it IS a truck trans.)

Noone's messin with you mstaedt, It is pretty cool that you have a 5.9L with a 5spd. It's definitely got to be rare. Depending on what you budget is there are lots of things you can do. Gears, intake, exhaust, manifold, rockers, and a cam!! You'd probably add gobs of power adding a cam. This could be pricey though so look into it before you leap. Since its a magnum, there are throttle bodies available as well. Go to krcperformance.com. They have a section devoted to the 5.9L magnum that is for those just getting started. You could try to get a hold of someone there as well that could give you some good ideas.

I'm prone to use alot of sarcasm, true.

But no, I certainly believe you!

As I said, so many of the r/t people have said they wish the had a manual also. I was kidding about the HO cams, in a 5.9.

Good luck, let us know what you do.

Todd
