Message: what year of mustang? I have friends with 318 dakotas and I would say get rid of the boat anchor and get a 360. But if you don't want to do that get some headers, cooler thermostat like 160, throttle body spacer. Not sure what else you can do to make any more gains without going Nitrous or charger.Have you timed your truck? 95 and 96 gts will run 15.3 in the quarter. Might be able to run with them if you can drive.

Message: Make the most of what you already have. Get GEARS! 3.90's are great. Does it hook up off the line or is it a smoke fest? Limited slip differential. Even if not an issue now, it will be with gears and/or engine mods. Put a solid tranny upgrade kit in. TransGo makes a kit that'll fill the bill. A more powerful engine does no good if it's all wasted with a slow-shifting slushbox tranny. 180 degree thermostat. Ultimately, a flow-massaged throttle body will help, but personally, I'd apply that TB spacer money towards a new cam or at least some 1.7:1 roller rockers. No need for a hotter computer til more mods than this are done. As for the so-called boat anchor....the 318 has what is considered an ideal rod ratio, which makes it happy to rev. Below 3000 rpm it's down on torque compared to the 360, but above that it pulls very close to the 360 in hp, so all is not lost with this engine. Naturally, headers will help too.

Message: Keep your 318, dont buy a T/B spacer, it is a total waste of money. Gen 1 is right, go with gears, I suggest 3.92's, or even 4.10's if you dont drive on the highway much. Fastman T/B, headers, and an m1 intake manifold, you should be able to smoke him. If not, get a cam, mopar sells a few that will work good with your truck. The thermostat is a good idea, but if you go with 160 it will use more gas, a 180 would be better if you care about mileage. The reason is, that your computer sees your truck as too cold anything under 170, and runs with a richer mixture to "warm" it up.
