Hey guys...any advice how someone without a whole lot of $$$ can get the most out of a 5.9L in a 1998 4x4 Durango. I was thinking about the K&N FIPK or the Mopar computer, but don't have too much knowledge about engines.
Thanks

1st thing is to open up the breathing of the motor. K&N is a good start. Getting a ported/polished throttle body is another good one.
Try thefastman.com for throttle bodies.

Maybe a 180* thermostat , thats cheap , engine will run cooler.

Then you can get some real nice gains with an M1 intake manifold and headers.

Not sure on the Mopar computer. I got one for my Dakota and it didnt do $h1t. Lotta R/T guys are going with the B&G Chrysler computer flash. Costs just a little more but totally worth it.

Happy modding !

Mopar computer is a great place to start. F&B throttle body and FIPK on the intake side. A set of headers and a good exhaust system. The t-stat is a good idea, along with a good set of wires and plugs.

billy ,

The MP PCM made me run about 10.5-1 A/F on the dyno and .2 sec slower & 1 mph slower at the track (same 60`) along with:

52mm TB
Mopar headers/Gibson 3"
K&N
180*

Thats why I didnt like it.

That's plain weird. Definitely doesn't jive with what we've typically seen.

When did you put the Mopar pcm in? In other words, you might have made one quarter run with a stock pcm that had the time to learn all your mods. If you just installed the Mopar unit and went to the track, without giving it some time to adapt, that might account for the difference in times.

The dyno number is odd though.

10.5 parts air to 1 part fuel. "A/F" is air fuel mixture. Best performance is usually 12.5 - 13 to 1.

I put the MP PCM in and drove it a few days before going to the track. The track is 45 miles away so I had some time to do some WOT runs for it to learn. I dunno , didnt work to well for me. The Jet chip piggied on the stock PCM was even worse.

The MP computer for my 99 dak R/T worked awesome and complimented my MP headers, MP wires, Intense performance air intake, 3923's, and robert shaw 180 T-stat.

I could be mistaken, but i thought throttle bodies didn't do much at all for horsepower, but did boost the torque quite a bit.

Big-torque,
I experienced the same problem on the 318. I was running a 1992CC 5.2L auto. It ran very good on the stock PCM. Best time of 14.8. I installed a mopar PCM and my run times went down. I posted that on a forum about 2 years ago and I got hammered by everybody. The problem is the shift points are bumped up from 5200RPM to 5500RPM on the old 5.2L Daks. The engine falls off drastically above 4500RPM due to the very small overlap that the cam has. At RPM's this high the cylinder pressure sky rockets causing detonation on pump gas. The PCM also raises the WOT ignition timing about 2 degrees and this worsens the detenation problem. I confirmed this with a timing light. I had ran the stock PCM for a year before I installed the mopar performance PCM. I ran the upgrade for 6 months before I took it out and used it for a paper weight for almost 10 years. I threw it away 3 months ago. I had the same experience with my 95Ram CC 5.9L.
