Subject: How good is homebrew?

This is a question for anyone running a homebrew
intake.

How good is your DIY efforts compared to a pro intake?
Anyone tried a homebrew and then a pro intake?

I'm just about to start moding my 01qc 4.7 4x4 and the
idea of fabricating an intake sounds cool but if it lacks
performance then I'd rather not.

Thanks.

Hey Buck

How did you build your homebrew intake? I have been looking around for different ideas. I have a 4.7 Quadcab

I put on a homebrew air duct (intake) a year ago and noticed some added power towing. There's a long grade on my trip to the lake and without the homebrew the tranny did about 4 or 5 2-3 shifts with the cruise locked at 55, with the homebrew the tranny stays in 3rd, looks like the intake is helping the engine produce more torque puling up the grade.

I have heard some mention of these things melting, but I have put mine through the heat test last summer driving in 125+ temps for extneded periods, no signs of melting. I popped the hood one afternoon after driving for 2 hours and then through town for 30 min and the ABS was rock solid. It was so hot out that the clutch fan was engaging at 80 MPH to keep the engine cool.

I made the standard ABS/Fernco/K&N homebrew duct, but saw one made from deisel truck rubber elbows and a peice of 3" SS tube. It definately looks better than a sewer pipe dangling off the front of the engine, but the SS tube might conduct some unwanted heat from the engine. But what the heck, these things are pulling air from the engine compartment which isn't the best place to get cool air from anyway.

I used 3" PVC(I know...save the melting stories), A 45 elbow, and a 3.5" filter.....Works just as good as any other intake. Curtis...If you can prove store bought intake will outperform my homebrew I will trash my homebrew and buy one of your choice

The subject is 'how good is homebrew'?

Well my homebrew is excellent, stronger than store bought, bigger and better head, much better taste, etc.

I make in different flavors, but the sam adams copies are my favorite.

Homebrew beer that is!

So homebrew guys, are you having any problems in wet
weather. Its going to piss rain here in Vancouver for the
next 3 months so wet weather performance is also an
issue. (probably the same concern with a store bought
intake as well of course)

I've been running my aluminum alloy homebrew for about 18 months now, and enjoy the results every day. Rain is not a problem at all with the rubber flap removed, and Fernco inlet to the stock air box. Gravity takes care of the big drops, and the air box has drain holes built in. The air filter is way vertical of any approaching water, and a K&N is a washable filter, anyway. I've checked the bottom of the air filter after driving in downpour rain, and it was dry. My build procedure is under the post "What is the best intake?". You couldn't MAKE me use a store-bought intake now.
