Subject: slotted - cross drilled brake rotors IP: Logged
Message: Is it worth the extra price to purchase these special brake rotors? Do they last longer? Are they providing better stopping power??? Any advice would be appreciated. There are slotted rotors, and there are cross drilled rotors. I dont know performance differences at all. But I know the least expensive place to buy these are
http://www.brakeco.com
They will custom make cross drilled or slotted rotors if you want them. Its an extra $50 per rotor to do this. I need new rotors quickly and would like some feedback from you guys on these.

Message: Slotted rotors are better then drilled and standered. They disipate the heat better and prevent warping of the rotor. Drilled rotors offer the same advantages of slotted but tend to form cracks around the holes. Go with the slotted. It will give you brake preformace and reliabilty far beyond stock.

Message: I agree. Drilled are supposed to be the best for dissipating heat, but as Mar said, they crack much easier than standard or slotted.

Message: i know that cross drilled are more temprimental, but if slotted are actually that much BETTER, why do car companies like lamborgini, ferrari, and porche use cross drilled? hell, brembo make some of the best brake system's in the world and none are slotted.

Message: Eric,
You answered your own question. Drilled brakes are better at dissipating heat. Nobody's disputing that. In terms of heat dissipation, slotted falls between drilled and regular. Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc use drilled because they want the best performance at any cost. If you can afford to pay over $100,000 for a car, who cares if you need to buy new brake discs more often? However for most of us, buying new brake discs is not something we want to do. So we either use the regular ones (because they are cheap) or upgrade to some slotted that are probably more reliable (I think most of us know that Dodge brakes are not the best) and they perform better.

Message: Ryan,
Why not take advantage of the Member Discount Powerslot Buy. It's still on as far as I know. And that's with Raybestos Brutestop pads. I'd think it's cheaper than an extra $100 to have slots cut.
I'm gonna do it-someday(waiting for the warp).

Message: John I would be careful about getting people to cut the slots for you. The people at raybestos that cut them are car mechanics not tool makers. I being a tool maker and mechanic know that when cutting it is all about the heat and coolent choice. A failure in choice or technique could result in changing the compound of the steel. This would result in a crack or a warp. Plus by the time you develop a worp in the stock rotor they will be rusted and gouged. My advice would be to by a brand new set of slotted.

Message: Hey Mar,
Thanks for the reply, points well taken.
I guess I was a little unclear in my post, tho.
When my stock rotors warp(seems common) or I need new pads, I plan on ordering Powerslot slotted rotors and Brutestop pads currently offered as a member discount thru DakotaUSA. It's a good deal and oter Dak owners have been happy with them. No cutting slots for me!
Now, when the time comes to turn the Powerslots(if ever) I recognize that extra care should be taken due to their design. Good news is that my mechanic is qualified to do it.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be clear and make sure others know about the available discount package.

Message: DO NOT buy Brutestop pads or you will be buying rotors much more often. I have had numerous complaints that customers are replacing rotors after 30k miles and the pads at the same time. the pads are so abrasive and hard, they literally grind the rotor to below minimums very quickly.
Brembo makes very good brakes AND Baer makes a crossdrilled and slotted rotor. The difference in what you are buying (sounds like a modified stock rotor) and the brembo or baer is the heat treating and higher quality material of the rotor to prevent the cracks. Some rotors are made of stainless steel and other high quality alloys. Higher performance packages also match the pad and the rotor to ensure durability, usually a softer pad and a solid rotor assembly. The pads are much cheaper, and sometimes easier to replace even if you are replacing pads every 15k miles. 10 sets of $25 pads is cheaper than one set of rotors. Keep in mind... crossdrilled rotors have less surface area for the pads to wear on and will wear quicker with a very hard pad like the brutestops.
Personally, I would much rather replace pads and I don't feel $50-60 for the brutestops is worth it. Frankly, I think it was a ploy to sell more rotors as Raybestos reps jokingly said lets sell the customer a more expensive pad that will cause them to buy a set of rotors even if we have to give them another set of pads because they did not last a lifetime. Don't let the joke be on you.
Just my $0.02 and hoping to help others.

Message: Ryan,
I have found a website that will sell you cross drilled break lines to go with the cross drilled rotors. Also look at the piston return springs for extra HP!!
