Does anyone know of a shift kit for the newer 5 speed automatic? I heard a while back on the forum that someone had one (possibly Transgo) under development.

Yeah -- saw that. Doesn't look like it works for the 03 though. Full power shifting is poor to say the least.

thanks!

really?

So you have FIVE forward gears in your 5speed auto?,-didn't think so.

I mean, floor it in 1st, and it shifts 4 more times, into a fifth forward gear, in a row?

Who knows and I really don't care (I'm looking for a shift kit/shift improver)....its got a bunch of gears and shifts a bunch. From the on-line sticker:

DODGE DAKOTA SPORT QUAD CAB 4X4 Exterior Color: Atlantic Blue Pearl Coat Paint Interior Color: Taupe Interior: Cloth 40/20/40 Split-Bench Seat Engine: 4.7L V8 SOHC Magnum(R) Engine Transmission: Five-Speed Automatic Transmission

Guess it it could be a two speed power glide if that makes everyone happy.

The 5 speed in the 4.7 trucks really is a five speed. But it has 2 second gears. As you accelrate the computer is supposed to decide which one to use. They designed it that way because the the 4.7 has a very sharp and narrow power band, and it drove poorly with a standard 4 speed. It's a fix for a design flaw.

Actually one of those second gears is a different ratio for better performance when kicking down into second. I don't know why some try to perpetuate the myth of the 4.7 having a narrow or peaky power band; it has very similar torque down low to the larger, lower tech 5.2. Five forward gears, including two different possibilities for second.

The peaky power band is not a myth, it's published data. If you look at the sales brochure for the Dakota, you'll find a dyno graphs right there. I have one from '01, and it has the 4.7 and 5.9 graphs side by side. The differance is quite obvious.

I've seen those graphs, if you look at the ones in the 2000 Commercial brochure, you get the more comparable 5.2 on the same page too. The facts that the 4.7 is done on a different scale, and the rpm scale for all is very compressed make these graphs a little confusing. NONE of these motors have a peaky torque curve. It would be fairer to compare the 4.7 to the 5.2, rather than the much larger 5.9, but let's look at them all. Down around 1500 rpm, the 4.7 and 5.2 both show around 240 lb/ft, while the 5.9 shows about 280. These are good solid low rpm torque numbers. About 3300 rpm where the 4.7 "peaks" out it has 295 lb/ft, about the same as the 5.2 which had just peaked at 5 lb/ft higher. The 5.9 has also gone slightly beyond its peak and is only around 30-35 lb/ft higher. At 5000 rpm, the 4.7 is making about 270 lb /ft to the 5.2s rapidly dropping 160 lb/ft and the 5.9s plummeting 120 lb/ft. Hmmmm, looking at those numbers, maybe you would call the 5.2 and 5.9 peaky ? The fact is, all these motors make great power down low and should not be considered "peaky" motors.

If that were true, then why did the engineers feel the need to develope a special transmission just for the 4.7?

That is true, all verifiable facts if you read the graphs. I would guess developing a more efficient transmission without bands to wear out might be called progress ?

The 5.3 is a chevy motor nimrod. Everyone else on this site knows that the 5.2 (318) has been around for like 35 years. Don't try to correct people if you don't know they are wrong. Go back to your chevy website and dont bother us. You are a moron, and know nothing about mopars. Dont talk sh!t, when you dont know sh!t.---merry Christmas:0)

Since it is well known that the 3.9 has less power than both the 4.7 and 5.2, does it make sense that a new transmission would be developed for the 4.7? Using this reasoning, the 3.9, and further, the 4-banger would have 10-speeds. No offense to the little guys. Get real.
