I want the quickest truck possible. Which truck will be faster with similar mods?
2001 Standard cab short bed Silverado
5.3 w/ 3.73s and locking differential
2001 Dodge Standard Cab R/T
5.9 w/ 3.92s and limited-slip differential

Tough call on pure straight line acceleration although I think the R/T would be faster. Also, the R/T has the chevy beat hands down when you come to a curve in the road. Much better handling. I'd take the R/T. The chevies claim good mpg but I haven't heard that from anyone who owns one.

I have taken a Chevy with the 327ci like you said, with my 1993 3.9 Long Bed Dakota. I would go with the R/T

Very tough call...the Chevy 5.3 is rated at something like 285 hp vs the R/T's 250. I know the chevy weighs more, but I think they'd be really close.
If you really want the quickest truck possible, get a Ford Lightning. Or supercharge an R/T and save $6000 over the Lightning.

Kyle M - This new 5.3 is nothing like the old 327. It is similar to the LS1 in the Z28.
Dan - Check the weights. A RC Dakota weights as much as a RC chevy approximately.
My son has a '99 R/T and my friend has a Y2K Chevy. 2 different nights at the same track they turned about the same times. Now the Chevy has Hypertech and Borla and is faster.

yea wayne, you are right about the weight of the trucks. truck'n mag did a comparison between a ram and a fullsize chevy. they said the ram weighed more and a dakota would match the weight better because everything in the dodges are more beefed up.
they did the same mods to each truck and the dodge won every time. they had to stop early because the chevy developed a rocker arm problem. the owner said he was going to trade in his chevy for a dodge. I LOVE that story!!

They weigh the same? I knew my Dakota was a little pig, but I would have put money on the Chevy weighing more. I guess it makes sense though...the CC wheelbase is only 1 inch shorter than a long wheelbase suburban, overall length is about 4 inches shorter. It just doesn't feel that big.

Well, when the chebby hits 99mph and shuts down, you can take him then! You should hit 117 at least.
The GMs still govern at 99 right? I try and stay away from the and learn as little as possible about them.. cause I think they suck and are overated on the HP figures

The 5.9 has 350 lb torque or somthing very near to that. That is a lot more then the chevy. The R/T is a much better choice. Much better sound and muscle feel. More reliability and stronger punch of the line. It will out corner our run the chevy any day. Plus your engine and rear end wont come apart on you after 6 months. Dodge makes parts that can handle the performence chevy just runs high power through components that cant take it. (I have experienced this many times during my days with a s-10 and silverado.)

reg. cab chevy silverado with a 5.3. you can't
ven compare the two!! I don't race anything like
that no more cause I got the killer bee kit On my
R/T and I am beatin camaro ss's and new lightnins.

kenny bell did a "killer bee" kit for dodge. you can order it through a dodge dealer. it consists of body kit, super charger, headers, chip, leather interior, 17" wheels (different than the R/T) and different dash (brushed aliuminum) you can order all, or pieces of the kit. and all under warrenty.

I never of any dealers putting a warrnety on a aftermarket supercharger like KB. Do all dealers do this or just a few?
