Subject: 4WD in Snow IP: Logged
Message: Folks,
Ive had my 03 QC 4.7L with part time 4WD for a year now and am loving it. Im from Alabama where snow just dont come, but Im in New York now and its the Daks first real bad winter.
I handled the recent snow storm just fine, a little sliding but thats because my feet put a little too much power to the wheels in first.
I hauled out 2 big SUVs yesterday out of the snow, and used 4LOW. While doing so, I was spinning for a bit and went up to 3000-4000 RPMs. I know your not susposed to push it to hard or fast in 4LOW. What do yall think is a safe way to operate in the snow in 4LOW? I dont want to hurt my baby, shes been too good to me. Thanks

Message: Drive it like you stole it. Really. You won't hurt it by revving to 4K. Towing/pulling in 4L actually takes some strain off the motor as you're geared much lower, no lugging. Gets the motor up into the power band where it's most efficient.

Message: True, and low traction situations take some strain off too. Last week when my old backhoe died at the bottom of my 700' long gravel driveway, I put a chain on it and dragged it up to the top in 4 low. At about twice the rated towing capacity, I think that's about the max a Dak will pull - about 9 tons uphill. You know how backhoes kind of rock back and forth once they get going ? Every time it rocked back against the chain the tires would scrub a little, but that breaking traction takes strain off other parts - I'd have been more worried trying this on pavement. This week followed that up pushing 15" of snow in 4 high with no problem. Just remember, 4wd helps you go and even helps you steer some, but it doesn't help you stop. And I wouldn't advocate towing 9 tons on a regular basis.

Message: Kowalski,
Little off topic, sorry for that.
You said you have a 700 foot drive way?
I grew up with a 500 foot drive way and hated every moment of it, 1/4 mile walk every day to catch the bus, now I would give my right nut to have it back.
Backhoe + long dirt drive way = good times!
Please tell me you have some woopdie dooes, ramps or something for that stretch.
Beginning and ending of every commute with a rally style drive way would really make me jealous.

Message: Nothing that fancy, but it does feature one banked turn, and a section over a culvert where if you go off, you're screwed. Lucked out, got a nice spot in the middle of no where through my wife's family and built the place ourselves. She's like you, didn't apreciate it when younger but loves it now. And to correct myself that's closer to 4 times rated capacity, not double. I expected some flames over abusing my Dak like that, surprised there were no takers. Anyone want a deal on a Case 580B with a bad shuttle transmission ? Split the machine to have it rebuilt once; I don't want that project again.
