Message: I heard that you can run the overdrive on the A-500's and 518's with a simple switch, I was wondering if this could be done for a 42re, I may be getting rid of my factory computer soon and don't want to have to worry about my trans not working. Also, does anyone on here know where I can get upgraded planetarys and input shafts for these transmissions?

Message: 1996 is the year the trannys went totally electronic, thus, RH's became RE's...."H" denoting hydraulic, "E" denoting electronic. Just swapping in an older type tranny won't solve anything. The PCM requires connection with the electronic valve body. I guess you could swap in a stick shift PCM with the older tranny. The pre-'96 trannys will require a toggle swith to energize the overdrive selenoid. If you use a factory tranny (as opposed to the MP non-lockup unit), you'll need a second switch to energize the torque converter lock-up function. You can do this easily, or get a controller from JVX. It works with pre-'96 units. You can set the speeds for engagement and lock-up. You can even set it up to stay in OD to have a different kickdown ratio for "passing gear." The 42RH was originally designated A500.

Message: I am going to go with a megasquirt EFI and a turboed 318 in the truck, with a 94' A-500/42RH, does that mean all I need is a lockup controller and a toggle switch for the OD solenoid?
Sorry if it seems like I am asking the same question, just a lil bit confused.

Message: Yes. The computer used various sensor inputs to determine when to kick in the overdrive and lock up the converter. You can do the same thing with toggle switches or on/off pushbuttons. Just remember to keep the kickdown hooked up. This is a mechanical connection and is vital to proper tranny functioning regardless of your setup.
