Subject: Y-pipe IP: Logged
Message: I have a 03, 5.9, 4X4 QC and only one cat. I've searched Y-pipe on this site and some posters suggest that going with a JBA or any other (larger) pipe will cause a loss in low end. The present Y is welded in front of the cat and looks so restrictive, I can't believe it would hurt to open it. Need input please!

Message: It appears that the magnum motors run best with stock diamiter pipes two into one not duals. You are dead on about the Y pipe being restictive. It's because the factory pipe is not mandrel bent. As you have already noticed the factory pipe has some pretty nasty restritions in its bends. The solution is to have a local shop custom mandrel bend a Y pipe for you to fit.
I haven't looked at the 4x4 application as I have a 2WD so there may be an additional issue there. I belive that the Y pipes are the same on both 2WD and 4WD. Clearance fit for 4WD and then one size fits all. I would not recommend changing the tube diamiter. An exhaust system will make or break a motor espcially in the low end torque area we all love so much.(Back pressure)

Message: I didn't think they made a 5.9 available in a Dakota anymore in 2003.
I couldn't find any of them when I bought my truck and I WAS looking for a 5.9.
I'm happy I bought this 4.7 however.

Message: If that's the case, would a Flowmaster (or other kit) with dual exhaust harm the engine? I am looking to pass my Dakota on to my kid some day, assuming I meet the right woman and have kids!

| rdkc01, this leads to the next Y-pipe question! IP: Logged
Message: Do you know if the JBA Y-pipe is the same diameter as stock. You are correct about torque, that is why I ordered my truck with 5.9 and 3.92 rear. I'm just thinking that the "Y" is way more restrictive than the stock manifolds, that this is the real bottleneck in this truck and opening it up a little would help at all RPMs! Thank You!

Message: I'm not sure what the JBA's specs are. It is certainly worth an e-mail or phone call to them.
Sephiroth: I have not seen a dual system back by a dyno readout yet that has performed well on moderatly modified magnum engines. There may very well be someone that has gotten a combo to work but then you venture into a science project,if you know what I mean.
