Subject: Exhaust WAY too loud in cab! HELP! IP: Logged
Message: I just got a new muffler and I gutted my cat, and ran a new 3 inch tail pipe. The exhaust sounds amazing, but when its about 2000 rpm and up, its almost unbearable in the cab. Anything I can do to quiet it down? Im thinking its because i gutted the cat, and its echoing the noise under the cab. Should i just get a new high flow one? Thanks guys!

Message: That's all that I can think of. I think that getting a new High flow cat may cost, but it should help the sound in your cab. What kind of muffler do you have? I know that I remember posts talking about cab noise versus muffler brand. I have flowmaster and a high flow cat and as long as my windows are closed it's not that bad. Then again I kind of like the noise, but it can be a conversation killer when your girl is with you.

Message: Its a dynomax ultraflo. i know the muffler will affect it some, but it shouldnt have made it THIS loud in the cab. i figure that the cat is just echoing the sound, since its just an empty box setting under my passanger seat now. i dont mind some rumble, but i want to be able to hear the radio too. So a high flow cat should help me out? Think it will create enough sound insulation?

Message: I put my money on your muffler, heck, you can put a straight pipe in place of the cat and it would still sound the same.
I would replace your muffler. You must be picking up resonance from your muffler. I believe that ultraflo muffler is a pretty small muffler.
Take a look at flowmaster's website, it explains how resonance in your cab occurs.
Just my 2 cents worth of info. he he he

Message: DakGuy: You had a recipe for noise there. The converter absorbs noise to some extent in the exhaust system. Pipe diameter has an influence, too: 2 1/2" is quieter than 3", etc. I had a Catco installed once for $130. For interior noise reduction, but great performance and sound out the back, you can't beat a Flowmaster 70 (also called "Big Block"). You can get one with 3"in-out. I prefer single in with 2 1/2" duals.

Message: Does your exhaust go all the way out from the bed or did you cur it somewhere under the bed or possibly turn down tip? If so its gonna resonate more. I have a dynomax muffler ( just like the Brola) its a big round one I think its the race series. Sounds really good and I have no cab noise from it. My tires are a different story. Thats why I want to go back to a all terrain tread and get rid of the muds I have on there currently

Message: Yeah, Ive got a big round style one too. Its a complete stock replacement system, no turn downs or anything, same side exit. I cant see how the gutted cat isnt helping this noise resonate more though. It sounds as if its coming from right beneath the cab. It just seems to me that a 2.5 inch pipe going into an open 16 inch long empty metal box then going back to a 2.5 inch tube would increase noise more inside the cab. Does anyone agree with me on that, or should I just replace the muffler and not waste the money on a new cat?

Message: I still say it's the muffler, the only way your gonna get resonance is exhaust gases are restircted. The only restriction you have now is in your muffler. The cat is free flow now, so no restriction.
If, you have a tiny muffler, you will get resonance.
Use, the 70 series flowmaster, it works great, pretty quiet cab. But, not as much performance oriented as the 50 series which are louder.
If, you are still hesitant, call flowmaster's free tech support. Ask them about resonance and if your cat is the problem.

Message: It's really a combination of the two. I'd be tempted to add a cheap "cherry bomb" type resonator before considering putting the power choking cat back in. If that wasn't good enough, other low restriction mufflers with less resonance are available.

Message: I think im gonna buy a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, they are chambered, so it should cut the noise down a lot, and ive heard of people complaining that they are too quiet anyway. This way, I can just exchange the mufflers when I want either more performance/sound, or a quieter everyday ride. Anyone have a the Super Turbo muffler?

Message: Ok, ive done some research on here, and have read many posts saying that the ultra flo dynomax isnt that loud in their cabs, and how they really like it. Why would mine be so loud? Im gonna take the muffler off tomorrow, and see if i get the same horrible resonance with just the cat on there. If i do, im going with a new cat. If its not there, im gonna get another muffler. Any comments on this?

Message: I had a Ultraflow on my 2000 mazda 626 V-6, and I noticed a bit too much in car noise also. I had a hunch, so I tried an experiment. While on a lift I ran the engine and had my friend rev the engine to various rpm's. At certain rpm levels I found that the ENTIRE exhaust system would vibrate. Apparently, the backpressure and flow characteristics of the new muffler caused the pipes to resonate.
We then welded small square chunks of steel(about 1x2", 1/2" thick) to several areas on the exhaust. Guess what? No more in car noise. The only remaining sound was the sweet snarl out the back! If possible, give your Dakota the same test.

Message: See, Matt just proved my theory,
The resistance of air is what causes the resonance. By welding the blocks in changes the resistance in the muffler by different turbulant air hitting the chambers in your muffler.
Thus, changing to a bigger muffler would solve your problem. But, would be quieter.

Message: What's up Guy (if this is the same Guy I know), haven't seen you on the h-town r/t board in a while. Did you get the exhaust done at FMG? Talk to Ginther on the delphi board. He's went through so many differant exhaust set-ups, he's gotta know what would kill that ressonance.
later,
Blake

Message: if you have room you might try a bullet muffler along with whatever muffler you already have on there.
