Subject: '03 Dakota Transmission Problem? IP: Logged
Message: Have a new 2003 Dakota, 4.7 4X4 C/C. Intermittently, when towing approx. 2K LBS. the engine loses power and starts to over rev. (Over drive is selected off) However the RPM's increase marginally, but the engine sounds like it's going to blow up (very loud). Since it's only intermittant the Dealer can't find the problem. Any one now what might be happening?

Message: I wonder if maybe you are hearing the CLUTCH FAN engage while pulling up some hills?
These clutch fans stay very lose unless when they are cold and first started or when the clutch engages from HOT air coming from the radiator. If you are pulling up a hill and your tranny lets lose of the torque converter (normal under throttle) and your fan is engaged, it causes a LOUD ROAR.
It may be normal. I removed my clutch fan and run electric only. I only put it on for the dealer when I get it maintenanced.
This weekend I'm going to be pulling my ATV's on a trailer to the dunes. I'll see how my truck does on the temp with no clutch fan. I'll bring it with me just in case I have to put it back on he he he.

Message: I am a little confused at your question. Is, it your engine is not making power and over reving? (this doesn't make sense) or is your transmission shifting funny?
If, your engine is chocking for air and hard to increase rpm's, you could have a clouged cat. Symtoms: poor fuel economy, loses power, engine wants to die after a short drive.
If, your transmission is shifting funny, your transmission speed sensor is going. Mine shifted funny until it finally went, engine light came on and would not shift out of second. $19 for the part. wooo hoo Do you notice your speedo acting up or is it just your rpm gauge?
If, your engine is spinning fast, but no power is being transmitted to the transmission, it could be a torque converter going bad. You could also have low transmission fluid. That is, i am assuming that your 4.7 is a auto.
