Subject: 5.9 timing mod worked... ? on Superchips IP: Logged
Message: I did the timing mod; oblonged the holes just to the point of breaking through, pinged some, 91 octane cured it. Wow- what a difference down low. Now I have a question- Since the computer was 'death flashed' (recall jargon taped to PCU) all I did was cure it, and brought it back to stock (give or take a small amount) correct? The Superchips would now truly be an upgrade, as opposed to just getting me back to pre-death flash condition, true?
What other steps do I take to avoid the ping, thermostat? Is the 180 going to reach operating temp in New York winters?

Message: Doesn't work that way. The Superchips would have been an upgrade without any messing around with the sensor. With that mod, the Superchips will probably be too much timing in the 91 octane setting.

Message: Believe me, I am not the kind of person to ask a question then argue, but the Superchips guy in the booth at SEMA said that they do not move the timing to a pre-set number (for example, from 32-36 degrees) they just add timing in increments, +2 here, +4 there, and since the truck is a 98, it would be best to get back to factory settings then modify. Truth be told, the guy was pretty young and I was skeptical. So what you're telling me is that they DO hit timing 'targets' as opposed to just adding a bit to different areas.
Thanks- what did you do for pinging?

Message: That's not what he's telling you, he's saying you might end up with too much advance. If so, you could then look for 93 octane and/or take some timing out by adjusting the sensor you modified.
