I get a kick out of the games played here - you know, the ones that bait the Amsoil sponsor and leads him to "come out swinging" with results of studies, graphs, charts, and testimonials concerning the effectiveness of his product line. And, by the way, Amsoil is a fine product, in my opinion. I don't happen to use it because it is not stocked on the shelves of the stores I frequent - an absolute necessity given the liklihood that Amsoil is no better than other top line synthetics (not blends) more readily available.

For me, the issue is not about which brand of oil to use - name brand oils are nearly indistinguishable in their lubricating characteristics.

The REAL difference in oils is to be found between those oils often referred to as "Dyno" oils and synthetic oils.

At this point there is NO DOUBT that synthetics, under nearly all real-world driving conditions offer superior lubrication when compared to their "natural" counterparts.

You don't need charts, bar graphs and BS to figure this out for yourself. Just look in your owner's manual - most manufacturers warn folks NOT to use synthetic oil during the "break-in" period of a new engine. Why? Because synthetics allow for so little friction (wear) that the internal engine parts won't have a chance to "wear-in" with one another. On the other hand, dyno oils do allow for such wear.

The debate might continue to rage concerning which synthetic to use, and it give folks something else to talk about, but their should be no debate about which type of oil has superior lubricating properties.

Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc. Pick a synthetic, any synthetic. It won't likely make a difference to your engine which brand of synthetic you use. The only difference it will make will be to the salesman hawking his product.

Just my opinion.

Well my last truck had Valvoline oil ( regular oil) in it for all its life. I bought it with 30 000 miles on the clock and ALL its had was regular oil. It currently has 360 000 miles on the original motor which has never been taken apart. Still runs just as strong. All my other trucks get regular oil when it comes to changing it. I jsut do it every 3500 miles. and yes I use the cheaper brand ( walmart brand) Ive used it in my dakota since it was new. My wifes Jimmy since 2000. havent had anythign happen.
I think most of the synthetic oils out there should last2-3x as long as regular oil. after all youre paying 2-3x the price.
as for the comment about the manufacturers warning you not to use synthetic oil on a new engine well the corvette and viper come with synthetic oil from the factory dont they?
Personally I could care less about synthetic oil. I parsonally have never seen a vehicle that was given regular maintenance destroy itself from lack of good oil. I think as long as you change your oil every 3000 miles youll be just fine.
You will never abuse a motor hard enough to warrant synthetic. I could see if youre in a Le Mans type race or Nascar or Indy sure I would want to run the best oil made in that motor but for a ford taurus that goes to pick up kids and groceries Well I dotn think its gonna be doing any 190 MPH coming out of turn 3 at Taladega.

Amsoil and their 2 Cents On Oils

Now that I made a few of you laugh with my prior post, I want to point out the following. I have recommended other manufacturers products on occassion ... including oils, Auto-Rx Engine Cleaner (which i do not sell) ... and here is one of my latest posts regarding filter choice (the post asked about the "best" $5 Filter:

My Response:

A $5 filter:

If you're set on getting a $5 filter, then Bosch Super Premium or Wix. Reasons: Top notch construction, good filtering, and good flow. (The PureOne is in this price range too, but I've got issues with restricted flow in the PureOne because of the densely packed media.)

----------

A $2 filter:

Walmart SuperTech - Manufactured by Bosch / Champion Labs. Wal-Mart buys in such quantities, that they can negotiate good prices with their suppliers. For approximately $2, the Super Tech filter is very well constructed. (( but ... Don't touch their SuperTech Oil ))

----------

And if a $7 filter (preferred customer price) is out of your budget for Amsoil SDF oil filters, it won't hurt to ask Santa for a case of Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oil and a few Amsoil SDF filters under the tree.

In response to ... Why Synthetic Lubricants?

Better cold weather starting due to lower pour points.

Cooler running at high temperatures and under severe conditions. This requires measurement of operating temperatures when using petroleum lubricants and then synthetic lubricants in the same equipment under identical conditions. A controlled test is needed to demonstrate this, and it has been proven by Amsoil and others when testing synthetics in general. Most users are able to actually see the difference in their engine and transmission operating temperatures when running under similar conditions.

Less component wear, as Amsoil and others have demonstrated that synthetics offer as compared to petroleum. Usually this is only apparent to the end user when comparing oil analysis reports and comparing the wear metals in parts per million per mile when using synthetics vs. petroleum in the same vehicle. Certainly after many miles of use there would be a visual difference in wear in a controlled comparison of two similar engines, transmissions, or differentials.

More horsepower as demonstrated on dynameter tests comparing Amsoil products with petroleum oils and other synthetics.

Reduced oil consumption as experienced by nearly everyone using synthetics due to lower volatility.

Reduced emissions, also due to lower volatility, but not generally noticeable by the typical consumer. And there are others. Most of these performance benefits require close scrutiny by a consumer, or a controlled test to demonstrate quantitatively.

Better Fuel Economy. Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. Once again, it has been proven by Amsoil through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers. In an extremely elaborate and expensive test run by an independent laboratory, which we have documented in a brochure, we showed an 8.2% fuel economy increase in Class 8 over the road trucks.

... Etc., Etc., Etc.

Thank You ... and Feel Free To Flame Away!
