Subject: ticking sound from dash IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2003 4x4 with only 12500 miles on it. Recently i noticed a ticking sound that seems to be coming from the dash. It does get faster with RPM. My truck still drives the same. It doesn't seem to do it all the time either. Any ideas?

Message: if it's more of like a rapid clicking mostly noticed at idle like when your at a stop light then I would have to say it's the PCV valve...my dad's 2001 durango R/T had a noise like that and we were convinced it was in the dash...and we figured out it was the PCV valve...he had always gotten deals on oil changes from the dealer and the valves that they use in my mind are faulty if they cause those noises...so we went to napa and bought a new valve and since then...not a single sound

Message: Hey thanks Frank....um...ya. Well anyways. There is also another nise that a am hearing. Its sounds like a little rattling coming from the dash too. It happens at idle and up to around 40mph. The rattling never changes speed, pitch, or volume. Again, it doesn't always happen.

Message: Have 03 with 3.9 auto. Same ticking sound as described above, definitely RPM related. Most noticeable after engine warm and light acceleration. Will have to look into the PVC valve for noise, maybe injectors or lifters?? Ticking sound is not noticeable with radio on or window down, so it's not to loud yet. May have to take it back to the dealer and let them check it out. But I'm sure it's NOT the TALIBAN!!!

Message: I have a 2000 4.7 Right after I got it I had what sounds like the same ticking coming from the dash. It was under warrenty so I took it to the shop. They had a rework order on this, that said the ground strap coming from the fire wall to the engine block was to long from the factory, and it could flutter against the fire wall. I found this hard to belive. They cut 1'' off the ground strap
and hooked it back up. Guess what??? NO MORE TICKING!!! ( HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU )

Message: Tried replacing PCV and moved ground wires on firewall, no help. Don’t believe its the speed cable because noise is engine speed related and not vehicle speed related, but thanks for the ideas. Anyone else got any idea on where the noise maybe coming from?

Message: achysklic the newer daks from 97 up do not use a speedo cable but are controled by sensors in the tranny that send a signal via the PCM to control the speedo reading. Now as a reminder for the few of you that remember and most of you that don't, on the gen 3's there is a tsb out, (no I don't remember the number on it) that talks about this very issue. It is related to your cruise control and actually does no harm, the faster you go the faster it ticks, but mostly but not always when the cruise is engaged, Your local Mopar dealer goes under the dash and replaces a few parts and the ticking goes away. Some of us like myself just turn up the radio a bit louder since it is not hurting anything and it beats the inconveniance of leaving the truck with a dealer for a day.

Message: I don't have cruise control and I dont have an automatic tranmision so I find it hard to believe that the speed is found through sensors in the tranny. I could be wrong though. But my truck also does the same thing with the clicking sound during light acceleration when it's cold. I thought that it might be my fuel injectors going bad, and I havn't worried much about it because it didn't change my performance. If it changes my performance I will worry about it. I can't loose any power with my 2.5L.

Message: The ticking sound most of you are hearing is actually the purge solenoid. On '97 to '99 Dakotas and Durangos this soleniod is mounted on the fuel rail on the drivers side. However, on the newer models, Dodge decided to mount the solenoid on to the firewall, which in turn allows the noise from the ticking soleniod to radiate into the cab, and the reason the ticking seems to increase with speed is because as you increase load, the purge solenoid increases its duty cycle or in other words, it purges more vapors to keep up with engine load. I believe DC has a fix for the noise, its a TSB in which they either move the soleniod or put in rubber bushings on the mounting studs of the solenoid. Hope this helps.
