Subject: Raced a 1.8L Turbo Jetta IP: Logged
Message: On the way back from Wal-Mart we were pulling away from a stoplight. This guy in this Jetta must have heard my truck and decided to hit it and as I saw him come up on me I hit it. As he squeeked passed me I could hear the slight whistle of his Turbo (this was before I knew what the car was) and I immefdiately said to my old lady, "hey, listen! This guys running a Turbo!". So as we came up to this next light I really wanted to run with him off of a light so I passed a semi real quick like to get up next to this car and I guess he thought the light was turning that very instant so he hit it. Bad mistake on his part. The opposite side Left lane got a green arrow and he junped through a red light! Luckily for everyone nobody was even there on the opposite side! (A few of these lights in this section run timers only, no metal detectors for left turn arrows).
So he pretty much ran that light so as it turned green I caught up to him at the next red light (keep in mind traffic was almost non existant on our side of the road, no other cars near us).
So I finally get to hit it and we both go. I kind of get him off the line and then as his Turbo spools up he edges past me but falls behind as he shifts. He's barely getting me and at times I keep getting ahead.
So we get yet another light. So I'm all for it so I hold my brake slightly and edge my gas just before the light changes to get a better launch. Dunno what the deal was but I smoked my tires bad so I let off and hit it again full throttle and pulled away as his car smoked the living sh*t out of his tires. Then he ran through his gears like crazy and edged passed me as we got some speed. As I stopped at the next light I commented about him smoking his tires that time. He said he turned his traction control off that time to try it.
I turned right to go on my way home. I couldn't believe my 4X4 QC Dakota could ever think of competing with that car. I think my Dak's starting to run descent. It sure surprised him, and me.

Message: Well, a turbo Jetta is is a about a 7 flat 0-60 car with a five speed. I read a test of a 2wd QC 4.7 Auto that did it in 7.4, so if your 4x4 can stay with the Jetta, it must be pretty healthy!
BTW, I just bought my first Dakota. A 2003 Sport CC 4.7 Auto, 3.55, Towing package, and I love it! I had my dealer put Gibson split duals on, and it's every bit the hotrod I never had. Cool.

Message: Thanks for the info. I had not yet looked up the specs on that car. It sounded good, could definitely HEAR the Turbo and he had some pretty fat wheels hooking it up. BTW, it had NO goofy crap like spoilers or fart pipes! All I could hear was that damn Turbo! LOL!
Anyway, my bro in law up the street has a 318 RAM. He's got pretty much the same tricks as me.
He says my truck has a better jump off the line and sounds more like a RACE ENGINE than his. According to him anyway.
Funny thing, when I have my two ATV's (Quads as I call them) in my trailer it will STILL burn the tires if I hit the gas quick from a stop.
You should see people stare LOL!
I DID remove the clutch fan. I may have noticed another slight increase in performance perhaps.
So far I have added a 40 series Flowmaster.
Installed a home brew intake taking all outside air.
Done all the TPS and IAT sensor mods which was piece of cake when I have lots of electronic components at home such as VOM's, temp meters, etc.
Installed a 160 degree t-stat (yes, 160 degrees, which probably acts more like a 170 because it doesn't have the extension on it like the OEM).
And finally I removed the clutch fan. And then built my very own solid state electronic control tied into the factory temp sensor to bring my electric fan on at approx 175 to 185 degrees and it works like a charm to keep my temp gauge barely off of the "C" unless I pull a BIG mountain.
I wonder what more I could do before I do the cam swap? I'm getting kind of poor like I always do in the fall (work slows down).

Message: Hey, did you say your DEALER put the duals on? Is it duals from the maifolds back (true duals) ir just duals form the muffler?
Glad you like your Dak. I seem to like mine. It's got the nice tow package too which comes in handy!

Message: ok, that's what I thought. I wouldn't think a dealer would do a full dual exhaust, even tho it would be cool!
I don't think too many people run true duals.
Gawd, I'm still not used the term "true duals". It used to be that if you said you ran "dual exhaust" it was just that. And all the way from the manifolds back. I think maybe people with the dual outlet muffler should post as having "Dual exits" to reduce confusion LOL!
I just hope when I run my duals soon (from the manifolds back with high flow cats), that I get the size perfect enough to give me a slight INCREASE in performance rather than drop some low end, etc. That would suck. I want the looks, sound of true duals, and an improvement as well.
It shouldn't be too hard LOL! OH damn. It may be. I'll be doing it all myself. Just me, my cordless Sawzall, grinders, my wire feed welder and a party under my truck! Damn I'm glad I can crawl under this thing with out jacking it up!

Message: One of my friends recently got a 2003 Jetta VR6. Let me tell you, those things haul ass. the 2.8 V6 is an awesome engine. It is rated at 200hp.
As for the 1.8T that this guy had, well I have never driven one, but I know they are rated at 185hp stock. So these things can move as well.

Message: Why wouldn't they be true if they came out the back?
I plan on running mine out the back. I was going to take the pipe from the passenger side and cross it out on the driver side rear to keep the pipes equal length.
I admit, most of the dual exits in th rear sound fake to me. They have some sort of HOLLOW sound when it's just a split off of a single exhaust.
I think they look VERY NICE when they do come out the side, but I want mine to be equally loud for people driving both on the left and right of me, he he he!
Now when I do mine, I just have to figure out how to accomidate for that damn single caty converter that has the in and out O2 sensor. I plan on using dual high flow cats. I heard some people have problems. God I hope not. I plan on using smaller pipe up front.
