Subject: Towed 6,000 lbs. Friday EASY! 4.7 5spd IP: Logged
Message: I towed a tandem axle trailer with 130 blocks, 220 hoggin bricks, 6 sacks of masonry, and it's a 20 footer trailer that has to weigh close to a ton by itself.
The blocks are 30 lbs apiece, and the sacks 70 lbs.
She just bowed up and towed it without any complaints creaks or groans.
So the towing cap. is NOT just for ad's sake. I'll bet she'd pull more with bags, a stouter clutch and some more mods.
I have a 3.55 rear gear with 255/50/16's so 1st is pretty low with that setup.
Anyway, I thought I'd post a report about it cuz I thought that was pretty cool.

Message: That is pretty cool!
I just towed my 12 foot trailer with two Quads (one of them a HEAVY Polaris) and another kids quad in the truck bed, my family of 4 and all of our luggage from Phoenix to the Ogilby dunes this weekend with NO problems whatsover with my 2003 QC 4X4 4.7 5-speed auto 3.55 gears.
Some family members that came with us were in a Dodge Cummins 4X4 and they had a slightly longer trailer with two axels carrying 2 quads, a 3 wheeler, and misc supplies like a BBQ grill, etc.
I know they out weighed my load a bit but I still passed them up the hill and his truck could not go over 90 MPH because of redline he said. That surprised me. I jumped over 100MPH for a brief moment just to mess with them.
That 4.7 will surprise you under load. My bro-in law asked me what mine had. I said it was a 4.7, which is approx 287 cubic inches or so. He didn't seem to believe me. He thinks I'm wrong about my engine size when I said approx 287. I guess Liters don't mean much to some people.
Now gas mileage and cost of fuel was a different story. I used more fuel than his RAM 3500 Cummins.
Here's what I towed...

Message: Sweet. I realized after I got my truck that a 3500 gets better gas mileage and lasts longer and pulls WAAAAAY more than mine. Thats WAAAAAAAYYY more towing cap. with those cummins. Oh well, at least my sport is stylin. Cab lights just look kinda backwoods to me.

Message: Cummins guy - how much diesel will you have to burn to make up the cost difference between a 4.7 Dak and Ram3500 Cummins?

Message: Well, Since my Dak was used, I'm not thinking NEW pricing here, like so many people pay. I personally think it's not so smart to spend dealership price on ANY vehicle. Buy em 2 years old with 30k and 5 to 6k less money. I could've got a cummins for about 14k.

Message: YANKEE JARGON?????
Here in Arizona most people I know call our bikes QUADS except for the few who still use 3 wheeler (ATC's) as they called them.
But still. I was impressed with what my 4.7 4X4 has towed! I pass a lot of other people on these hills. On this trip I was afraid out family members in their CUMMINS 3500 would leave me when we got to the hills. But for some reason with the loads and all I PASSED them! And they were trying too!
That new 5 speed auto sure gets the power down I think.
I'm sure if I had the same weight as them it would have been a different story. They were probably pulling 1000 lbs more, if that.
