Subject: Dropping a 440 in a dakota IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota regular cab 2wd. I have fixed up my truck and have it looking nice. I really wanted 5.9 to drop in it, but I just can't find one. But, I have found a couple of 440 blocks. Does anyone know if it is possible to drop a 440 in the newer model dakota? And if so, would I have to give up anything that's under the hood now because of a lack of room? I have heard of it done in the older models. Thanks!

Message: If your going to add (drop) a 440 into your Dakota. You might need to replace your automatic with a Stronger A-610 Tranny. What year was your engine built?
If your using a 6 bbl; Might be a good idea to swap for a Dana 60 with a sure grip rear end.

Message: no A-610 only use a brainless 747 with racing grade clutch packs after a 440, way too much torque for anything else. A Dana 60 most likely won't hold up either as it was designed for mid-size cars wieghing in 3200 not almost 4000 like a truck does.

Message: Good advice on the 747, But you're a little off on the Dana. The old A-body cars weighed about 3300 lbs, and the mid size B-bodies weighed around 3700. A Dak 9 1/4 rear might be strong enough, the old 8 3/4 rear would definitely be strong enough. The factory typically put the Dana behind high performance big blocks with manual transmissions, its the strongest and should be just about bullet proof. The old 6bbl set up looks sharp but just as much power can be made with a modern 4bbl. I think Intense has the best idea, the 400 low deck big block can be stroked quite big. Otherwise save the weight and think about a stroker 360 - if you can't find a 5.9 you're just not looking hard enough.

Message: Hey wattanerd....WHAT?!?! That has to be a typo. The DANA 60 was designed for cars??? Do you know the origins of the DANA 60? It was the ONLY rear that Chrysler could fit in a car, that could also handle the punishment of stick-shift equipped 426 Hemi Cars. 3200 lb cars??? This thing was originally used in big trucks, which made for some jokes back in the day. Those rears are capable of living behind 9-second Super Stock cars with little in the way of strengthening. The ring gear is 9 3/4 inches. It is THE King Kong rear axle.

Message: you dont think a d60 will hold up to your 440? my buddy has a front d60 in his chevy 3/4 ton on 44 inch rubber, he also has a 454 vortec. he hasnt broken it yet, i dont think you'll ever have any worries if you run one. they are also the choice of many rock crawlers, what what do they know anyway

Message: Ok well to start out I'd like to say dodge has never made a "747" transmission. Now a 727 sounds more like it doesn't it? Well yes it does. A A-610 transmission will not mount to a 440 unless you have some type of adapter plate which probably isn't even made for the pure and simple fact that the 727 is the strongest automatic transmission ever made(Question comes to mind: Why settle for less?) The dana 60 is the strongest axle ever put into a Dodge car. And the 8 3/4 comes in next. I don't know where in the hell you get your information about it being weak (must be chevy oriented or ricer. No dodge knowledge apparently.) The stock 9 1/4 should be strong enough with a few mods. Anyway if you change to a 8 3/4 or dana 60 your looking at a bolt pattern change to five lug instead of dakota 6. Good luck, hopefully you find better advice in the future because the people who have responded so far don't have much information worth listening to. Oh by the way I have a 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T with a 440/4-speed combo What do you think is out back????????? DANA 60!

Message: A610? What's this? Might you be referring to the A618? If so,oooooopppssss. If there is an A610, fill me in. If it's the 618, it will bolt to the 440 with an adapter supplied by JVX. Why? Because people like the 727 with an overdrive. In case you didn't know it, the 518 and 618 are derived from the 727.

Message: And the reason some people build up 904s innstead of 727s is there is less power loss through that transmission. While the 727 is the stronger, a 904 can be built quite stoutly with the right parts. My bad for not catching the "747" mistake flame red, but why say "the people who have responded so far don't have much information worth listening to" when the 3 posts ahead of yours all pointed out the same erroneous info on the Dana rear that you did.

Message: Some states won't allow an engine to be replaced except with the same engine and it must meet all emission standards as the original, unless the vehicle is at least 25 years old. But speaking of 5.9 engines, a lot of motors are advertised in Mopar Muscle magazine in varying configurations and horsepower ratings including hemis and 360's. Some of the 360's will put out as much HP as a 440 but without all the fitting headaches.

Message: Yeah, MA is one state which requires that the engine in any vehicle must meet all the emissions regulations of the model year of the vehicle. Not much leeway to be creative. Half the stuff that Foose and Barry White do, wouldn't fly here.

Message: There are a couple of adaptor and mounts made for putting the 440 into the Dakota . Schumacher Creative Services make the mounts for a drop in. JW Ultrabell housings makes the belhousing adaptor Summit Racing sells them or buy on line . You can use the 518 or 618 gas engine only for the swap due to govenors being different. The 95-96 618 is a non computer lockup overdrive I am going to use on my truck for my 440 .
