Subject: Upgrading '94Dak front brakes. IP: Logged
Message: I have a '94 Dakota with a 318 eng. and all stock brakes. I know in '97 Dodge went to a two piece hub and rotor assy, will this hub fit a '94 spindle? If it does, this will allow me to buy slotted and/or cross-drilled rotors which will help with the fade problem I am experiencing. I would appreciate any input on this, whether someone has attempted this swap or knows of any other upgrades for the front brakes on the '94 Dakota's.

Message: Brembo has rotors for a '94. You can get them through Tire Rack.

Message: Are those rotors grooved or anything? Have you tried them, and if you did was there any improvement in fade?

Message: I don't think they're grooved, etc. Being Brembo though I'd expect good quality.

Message: For the slime with too much money, I'll drive my truck my way, you drive your truck your way(I have put a few high dollar sport machines (ie..bmw's) to shame with my low brow V8Dak, so don't knock it 'till you try it) and yes they fade badly after only two slow downs from 90 or so for a nice long sweeper on some winding TX back road. Roll on the gas, kick the tail out, and exit at 50 or 60 or so and set up for the next sweeper....oh D*%#! where'd my brakes go. Maybe I'm just more crazy than the high dollar sport machine drivers, but reference above again. Anyway, to the more serious posts, which is the Gen 2? What years does that cover? I thought the Gen 2 was the new body style, ie.'97 or newer, or is that wrong? I have been fairly pleased with the stock Dak, so haven't looked into upgrading etc. untill now, so I am not up on all the terminology of the Dakota's and the different years etc. Again the help will be appreciated.

Message: Gen I is generally acknowledged as 87-90. The bodystyle changed in 91 (including a change to a 6-lug bolt pattern). Magnum motors came out in 92. So Gen II is 91-96 or 92-96 since 91 is kind of a bastardization. Gen III is 97 and up.
Erik, when is the last time your brake fluid was changed? Old fluid or dirty fluid might explain your brake fade too.

Message: Bill, I've been having brake fade from brand new and I had to change a caliper about a year ago and completely bled the system then. The caliper I changed is wearing brakes unevenly also and my other side brakes look almost brand new, but the truck doesn't pull HARD under braking. It pulls a little, but not yank the wheel out of your hand pull, like I thought it would do if only ONE side was doing ALL the braking. I am to the point of changing both calipers, pads, rotors, and brake lines and then completely drain the system and put all new fluid in. I had the fade problem before this uneven brake wear showed up. The rotors are beyond turning so I was looking at other options for rotors. That is what started my line of questioning. Thank you to everyone for their inputs. Help on the uneven brake wear would be appreciated also.
