Subject: My New Gears

Message:
Hey all. After months and months I finally bought my gears, locker and had 'em installed.
I've got a 95 4x2 with a 318 and 46rh (now :-) )
it had the factory one wheel wonder 3.55 in the back end.

It had 11 pinion teeth and 39 ring teeth. I believe thats 3.55 anyways. I put in a PowerTrax Lock-Rite locker and 3.90:1 gears.

What is the break in procedure for new gears? I was told just to keep it under 70 for the first few days, and vary the speed a bit. Any more information than that?

The locker is pretty agressive, and you have to be very careful when making slow sharp turns as it will drag the outside wheel if you give it too much gas. Other than that its not too bad. Its reasonably quiet and there is no 'clunking' just a ratcheting sound while unlocked in a turn.

I'll keep you guys updated, and I just can't wait to romp on it for the first time :-)

Take it easy for the first 300 miles or so. Then pull the cover and change the fluid. Check for any excess metal, you'll probably see a little bit. You'll know "excess" when you see it. Reseal the cover, fill it back up, and you're good to go. I change my diff fluid once a year.

Man 300 miles is a long time for me, but I learned my lesson when I put a new trans in. Always wear stuff in properly. Oh well, guess I'm going to make a trip to Green Bay :-)

Thanks

I don't recall exactly. I bought the parts from various places over a long period of time.

Superior Gears 3.90:1 $230
Install Kit $150
Powertrax locker $450 (bought used off ebay for 'bout 200 in damn good shape)

I had a friend do the install for me. I could've done it but I don't have time being a college student. labor: $200

Gears and locker. I could have gotten off for less, but with 100,000 on my odometer I figured I"d better do all the bearings too. I bought that locker used for much less than retail as the parentheses indicated.

Its been a while since I put the gears in and I'm finally getting around to reposting.

It took a little while to get used to the locker because it is so agressive compared to a posi, but the difference in traction is unbelievable. It pulls much harder that I could have ever thought from a stop.

My highway RPM only went up about 250-300 at 70 mph which isn't too bad.

The first gear lube change was a bit intimidating because it came out gray but its really quiet and operates much more smoothly now. So what should be next on my list of mods?

I'm thinking headers but don't know whats available. There's Gibsons but I don't have much faith in a set of $150 headers. What kind of alternatives are there now?
