If you use your truck off road at all, or in a dust area I would recommend against building a homebrew that eliminates the stock airbox and simply hangs a cone filter at the passenger side of the engine. Some will argue it is safe in dusty areas or off road if you use a "pre-runner" foam boot over the K&N. However, when you do that you initiate a restriction to airflow - so what the h+ll's the point?

I suggest running 3" ABS from your throttle body to your stock airbox and installing a K&N filter.

Just my opinion - I'm sure some (many) would disagree.

K&N literature claims the precharger (the prefilter) filters 98% more dust while restricting only 2% of the airflow. Since the K&N filter itself is supposed to provide anywhere from 30-50% more airflow over the stock filter, it still works out pretty well. The precharger is only $25. I'm getting one next week.

Yes, it's been beat to death LOL!!!
But who cares. This is why we keep coming back here.

Anyway, here's the part number for the cone style 3 inch K&N filter RC-3320

It was approx $50 to order it at Pep Boys.

Mine went down behind the fog light. All outside air.
While towing up hills I didn't notice much improvement. So I removed my cone style K&N and re installed my STOCK filter box with the K&N I allready had. However I used my insulated ABS pipe going to the airbox and from the airbox to the throttle body. It looks better than the stock air hat and works as good as the cone style filter on the low end. I may have had slightly more upper end with the tube and cone filter but that sucker was loud and I didn't want dirt and water in there when I go of road.

Here's the two set ups I did.

Stock set up.

All insulated ABS with filter up front.

I removed that for fear of water getting in there and into the engine.
I'm sure it probably would not have since I've ran open style filters on cars for YEARS.

Here I removed the cone style filter and installed the stock box with drop in K&N filter.

Hope this helps. Click here for all my mods.

Oh yeah.

I want to keep water like this out of my sh*t!

That's why my stock airbox went back on.

If you're not going to be doing that, and ENJOY the sound of a very loud intake then use the pipe with the cone filter. Just get the filter OUTSIDE of the engine compartment for COLDER air.

I used an RX-4140.
The filter cost me about $80 bucks but fit perfect after I found my ABS pipe!

Yeah, the filter I mentioned is actual 3 inch. So it fits around thin 3 inch metal pipe but not ABS since it's outside diameter is almost 3 1/2 inch!

What I had done was use a short piece of metal exhaust pipe which fitted inside the 3 inch ABS where I sealed it together and then attached the filter to that.

Also, a 3 inch "NO HUB" rubber coupler usually found in the same area as ABS supplies will fit perfectly to join your 3 inch ABS to your throttle body on the 4.7
