im looking into buying an older dak to build a drag truck out of it. ive been contemplating on what engine i should get. i want to go as big as i can without major modifications to the truck. i want to find one at a junkyard so it needs to be fairly easy to find. how bout a 340, 440, ??? im not really sure what i should look for. any suggestions or help on what ill need would be helpful. i want to go carbed also. thanks

i aslo meant to ask about the tranny...whenever i find the engine i want would i just pull the tranny out too or should a get a brand new tranny??

a 360 would probably be the best option but you could probably get a 440 in there. If you go small block i would go with the 360 over the 340. They are cheaper and easier to find.

Why not just order a crate V-8 motor from Mopar. Go with the 380 hp version and add your carburetor and etc for accessories. Then bolt a junkyard 727 Torqueflite behind it. All told, you're looking at a $4500 venture. And probably a low 12 sec truck.

how easy is it to find a 440 in a junkyard? and to find a tranny? ive never really looked yet. i plan on looking around for a while before i do this and i need to research more but how much would an engine and tranny cost in a junkyard? thanks, if anyone knows of where i can get one let me know. i dont want to buy a crate motor...well I DO...but i want to build this truck for fairly cheap. as in not spending 6 grand on a motor. any estimates?

400 big blocks are still pretty common, can always add 451 stroker kit down the road. Some people think the Low deck big block is stouter than the 440, and a little lighter. Or 360, cheapest, easier to put in, a lot lighter, maybe stroke to 408 later.

i agree with the meaning of "slow" in his name. what mods would i need to put a 5.9 or 440 in? i think id need new mounts for the 440 but not the 360. and also what else would i need, im guessing i could keep alt, rad and fan, and most of the stuff in the donor truck.

A big block would need a different tranny. Use the search function in this forum to see what other guys here have had to do for these swaps.

You will need a 727 or 904 tranny.. or four speed manual. The magnum accessories wont bolt on.. you will have to custom mount them like i am doing.

intense what are you putting in? I have a question. I have a mag 6 in there right now. I was under the impresion to put in a mag 360 you dont need to change the mounts. if this is true can you put in a non mag 360 with out changing mounts. I doubt this is the case but I am curious

does anyone know if its possible to change the overdrive gear on a 46re from the stock .69-1 to a .50-1? id like to get 4.56 gears on my r/t but really would like to rev low on the highway. i do about equal amounts of city and highway driving so any info would help a lot.

yamaharider,
the 360 magnum will bolt to the factory mounts already on your truck. You will need a beefier tranny and a torque converter for an externally balanced motor. With the LA block, you will need to make motor mounts if you have a GenIII kota or you can buy them at www.engine-swaps.com if you have a GenI or II.
I am putting a 400 big block in my truck... just got my heads today.
