Subject: Researching R/T heads, need MFG feedback IP: Logged
Message: Hello everybody. I am reasearching the R/T heads for a 360. I am from the Jeepsunlimited forum and this is my first post here. I would like to know what your guys' experiences are with the three big head porters, KRC, Hughes, and Fastman. Any info good and bad is appreciated. I would like to know who in your opinion does the best work and if anyone stands out above the rest. Thanks, Derek

Message: Dan Arcand aka the fastman without a doubt. He is expensive($2500) but for good reason. If you want the best then go through him. I don't have heads ported by him but know people that do and he does an awesome job. If you can't afford Dan then call and talk to John M., his number is on his website www.southeastrt.com he builds some badass motors too.

Message: KRC is the first choice as far as I'm concerned. His heads flow more than Dan Arcand's or John Mercedes. Dan and John's stuff is decent, KRC's is the best.

Message: Is more better ? Big CFM #s @ high lift/high rpm arent always best. Your motor doesnt spend alot of time above 5500 rpm.
"Dan & Johns stuff - decent"
"KRC is the best"
I guess we all know where your money went.

Message: I agree, more flow in and of itself does not mean more power. KRC has some excellent low lift numbers and high lift numbers so that you're making good power down low and up top. I know they've got more quick trucks out there than anyone else. As I said, Dan or John's stuff is decent. Yeah, that's where I spend my money. I like the best.

Message: IMO the fastman is the way to go. From what Ive seen and heard Dan's trucks run more consistent and faster times. Dan is also one of the most personable guys your gonna find. Dan is small operation and just works harder and cares about his customers more than most. He will talk to you about your stuff anytime day or night. Try calling krc at 11 p.m. and see what happens. Krc's work is quality too but to me its a matter of effort. They are fairly comprable products wise. Call both of them tell them what you want and get the numbers. See what they say, base your decision of how they react and treat you as a customer.

Message: I know of a few people who bought there 2.02s from KRC and ended up sending them to Dan to get them to flow the way they should. Some were so bad they couldn't be saved at all. Then again, that was a while ago and things do change.

Message: I know of more than a few people who have talked to Marty late at night or on a weekend to help them troubleshoot something. He personally came all the way to Connecticut from Florida to help me on my truck a couple of years ago. Again, I'm not trying to take down Dan, John Mercedes or anyone else. KRC's service to it's customers is as good or better than anyone. As for Dan having to rework KRC's heads? Anything is possible. I've also heard of KRC having to rework Dan's heads and John Mercedes' stuff as well.

Message: I wasnt bashing marty or krc I was telling him to check both out. Marty is a good guy so I could see him helping you out like that, but he is also really really busy now. They both offer similar products. I also dont see krc re-working dan's stuff, not because he is perfect, but because he would do it himself if something was wrong. I live in chicago so i am closer to Dan's shop and he to has driven to chicago to help local guys out also. If you live near florida it would make sense to do get the work done locally.Easier to shoot people if they are local and rip you off.JK lol. I mean do some research and see who is gonna take care of you before you spend the money.

Message: WOW! Seems there is some great debate going on between Dan and Marty's work. I hear nothing of hughes work though. Should I not even consider them? My 360 is not going to be a track monster. I want the power to be for daily use. Thus I don't need a high rpm monster. Is there anyone that would suite street performance more? What about cam options? Does Dan do good cam work? Is he knowledgeable about them? Same questions with Marty?
I really appreciate the info guys, this is alot of money and don't want to go the wrong route.

Message: Just like I don't see Dan reworking Marty's stuff, Marty would do it himself if there was a problem. Anyway, we've killed this pig. Let's talk cams, lol.
Every engine builder has different ideas on cams. You can looks at some of KRC's off the shelf grinds on the website. Marty can also custom grind something to suit your needs. I'm sure Dan can do the same. Either one could built for street and/or strip.

Where you from? One thing you need to consider also is pcm and tunning issues. Youll have to get all the new numbers dialed in. What mods do you have? A heads/cam combo may not be the best for street use depending on your current mods?
Call these guys and see what they say, then post it up. Itll be interested to see what they say.

Message: Gerber ,
Might not need big heads and cam to get what you want. Theres alot of guys running well into the 13s with stock heads and cam N/A. Heads and cam combos are a bitch to tune also.
Do your homework !

Message: Well...I'm on both sides of the street here. I installed a "Lightning Killer" long block in my '92 Dak from KRC. Were as, I had Dan work with me to get a Martin Saine Transmission/Converter built for the engine as well. So, hopefully, I'll get to take the new combo out tomorrow (Saturday) to see how things hold up. I'm not going to thrash the set up just yet, but I can tell you all this; the engine idles/revs like a solid-lift bracket engine (man I love uncapped Hookers) with no hint of problems (even on a Mopar 5.2 PCM). However, I haven't gotten a chance to test the transmission yet, but I'm willing to bet that it's on the same standard as Marty's engine.
Either way you go the 2 gentlemen know their stuff. Marty was exceptionally helpful in working with me on my engine, and now complete KRC fuel system (not yet installed). Dan also went out of his way to get the information, to turn over to Martin, to get me the transmission/converter I needed. If I had it all to do over again, I would use both shops for my parts.

Message: My list of mods so far are this: K&N FIPK, Holley 52mm TB, 2bbl MPI intake manifold, Leach Headers and full 3" exhust back, Mopar Performance ECU, Ignition upgrade. The next step for me is definately heads and cam as well as 1.6RR. I have a lifted jeep that is rather heavy. I am also going to regear to 4.56's. I am running 32" tires. I would like low end and a strong mid range. High end is not as important but I would like more than I have now. I am also planinng on getting the SMT-6 box if I can find anyone to tune it. I live it Utah, but will be doing this install in the Phoenix area. Anyone know of someone down there that can tune the SMT-6???
Thanks for the replies guys.
