Subject: Tire Selection IP: Logged
Message: I am looking for some opinions on tires. I am going to be moving to an area where there is snow. I am going to run 255/50-17's and I am considering Pirelli Scorpion Zero's, BF Goodrich G-Force KDWS, Kumho Esta STX and the Continental ContiExtremeContact. Any and all input or reviews would be great. SO far I am leaning towards the Kumhos.

Message: As a suggestion you might wish to go to tirerack.com and read the reviews of each tire you listed. While you might get 2 or 3 opinions here, on that site you will get feedback on these specific tire brands and models from dozens of people that actually own them.
Good luck,
MD

Message: I have done that, but it seems that few people mention snow traction unless you are looking at a snow-specific tire. I was hoping to find some real world opinions that are related to what I want to know. Thanks for the suggestion

Message: The problem you are confronted with is the fact these tires are not true "truck" tires - I suppose they are referred to in the trade as "sport" truck tires and as such, they are basically configured as a street tread. If snow traction is the central issue, an all terrain or a somewhat more aggressive than average highway tread is in order. The problem here just might be finding an appropriate tread in a 17" tire (a rim size I am not familiar with on a first hand basis. Finding a tire that handles more than a boulevard in a 27" diameter, 10"+ width tire might be very difficult. If you are willing to a narrower tire, you might have more luck.
Good luck,
MD

Message: One last thought - Michelin makes the LX4 in a 245/60/17 (slightly over 28" tall/9.4" width) and it is rated at tirerack.com as excellent in snow. Not quite the boulevard cruisers the 255/50's are, but these are really good tires - I've ownewd LX4's before.

Message: Look at Nokian SUV-WR tires.
Good rep in the rain and snow, quiet tires.
No white letters on the 255/65/16, though.
Cheaper than Goodyear and easier to balance.

Message: I have had Kuhmo ECSTA STXs for 27,000 miles on my '01 4x2 QC. I think they'll be good for another 7-10,000 miles.
What I like:
1) They have been great tires on dry and wet pavement; I can't comment on how they would do in snow or off road.
2) They were only $83 per tire.
3) Cool tread design.
4) As quiet as original Eagles.
What I don't like:
1) They are directional and I have an open differential. To get the most mileage out of them, I needed to remount them to the opposite rims (for $40.)
2) I was expecting more miles, as I got 50,000 from the OE Goodyear Eagle LSs.
Bottom Line:
When I need new tires, STXs will be my first choice (unless the price goes up drastically.)

Message: Glen, (i hope this is glen..lol) from what i understand BFG designed the KDWS with some snow traction in mind.
K=key word
D=Dry
W=Wet
S=snow
now, i wouldnt drive through 4' of snow with them, but a light dusting or something like that, and you should be fine. Bill H (AKA BH/RT) just put some KDWS's on his RT, and he seems to love them.

Message: I ended up ordering the Kumho STX's on quite a few good reviews and suggestions from others. I will let you know what I think of them.
