 Subject: Drop in K&N filter all hype?

Went on line, read all these forums and power and mileage improvements from K&N drop in for Durango 4.7l. My mileage went in the toilet, and the barely noticeable 1-2 extra horses are not worth the extra $500 a year in gas. Yes, I like the sound, but the COMPUTER in these newer cars will sense the extra air going in and dump extra fuel I believe. Anyone want to buy a practically new K&N drop in? Most people swear by them, but I would rather have the smoother idle and the extra $$$ with the mopar.

I'm going to remove my K&N and see if the mileage is "somewhat positively" affected....usually average 12.5 - 13.5 in town and 15.9 on hwy. If mileage increases.......K&N for sale...... Results next week.

If you saw a significant change in milage you probably have another problem. I got mine knowing performance gain would be very minor but I won't have to keep buying paper filters.

With the K&N in my mileage went up about .5 MPG, power went up too... barely noticable, but I could tell something was different since the change. The thing is only $50 and lasts for a million miles! How can you go wrong with that?

I dropped in a K&N about 15K miles ago and saw a noticable increase in throttle response (5.2L)and gas mileage (about 1.5 mpg). I always changed the paper type of filter every 2nd oil change (after 6K miles) and could tell response decreasing the closer it got to the maintenance time (dusty area). After reading the posts about K&N I went and looked at my throttle body and it appears to be very clean not that I can see small dust particles. As a precaution I have installed an Airforce foam precleaner and didnt notice any change in response. The long term value and performance appears to be worth sticking with K&N. My 2 cents...

It's easy to offer a mega-mile warranty on anything. Marketing 101: appeal to the senses
instill confidence in a product,ie ass wiper, gold coin finder, make a million from the couch plan, K&N, yah dude, K&N,
My thoughts after 60+ vehicles, ... why spend extra money for more dirt than horse power? Where are the race results? Buy a larger paper element and spend the money on modifications that show on the dyno and not in the oil! Don't forget marketing is everything! Sorry if I poked a hole in someone's
....
filthy KN, it was already full of holes! Don't trade until at least 900000 miles. Good Luck.

Who's talking about spending extra $ - we're talking about saving money by not having to buy as many filters. A "larger paper element" ? Wouldn't fit in my air box !

Hey, I just realized that you guys are right, all this time I have been a beliver in K&N because of the independant research I did before I purchased it, and asking the mechanic friends that I know, but after reading this forum and listening to you experts, I realize I should have been getting my information from the INTERNET. What a better source of info than from a bunch a people I don't know on an open forum on the internet, because you know I belive everything on the internet to be true. Al Gore told me it was all true when he told me how he invented it. Boy do I feel dumb for not listening to you guys sooner.

K&N filters do not add boost or anything so I don't think it is going to cause the computer increase fuel consumption too much. They simply flow better. So at speed it will flow a little better air but when you stomp on it its going to really show, and yea, that is when your computer might add more fuel than witha paper element, but when you're stomping it you're probably not going for top notch mileage.
Also, cylinder damage? Engine failure? What are you people talking about. I don't want a flame war, but I just don't see any downfalls to the K&N filter,a nd if there are, I'd like some info that makes sense and supports itself. Anyone know anything bad about the K&N in this aspect that they can actually explain and maybew backup with links?

Just as I thought. Unless someone presents a reasonable arguement against it, I will continue to believe that K&N filters improve performance and are a substantial improvement in quality and serice life over paper elemnts.

Man K&n is overpriced hype,do a oil analysis and you will dump the K&N,if you drive in any dusty terrain look on the inside of the filter after,its ugly.

I researched the h+ll out of this before I decided to go with a 3" homebrew, revoved air baffle and dropped in a K&N in the stock air box. I did not dyno, so I have no idea if it helped power, but it sounds nice - BTW, anyone that tells you they gained power without the benifit of taking a before and after dyno reading is blowing smoke as you can't tell a thing by the seat of your pants.
If you increase airflow in, you can make power gains by increasing airflow out. Don't waste your money on a cat-back exhaust system, just install a good flowing muffler (I happen to be partial to Magnaflow) - use stock 2 1/2" tailpipe; going with 3" will reduce torque, at least on a 4.7 it will - I can't be definitive about other engines.
Paying $250+ for a so-called "cold" air intake is a waste of about $150 in my opinion.
Now for the bottom line: If you don't plan on installing a more free-flowing muffler, then the only good reason to go with a K&N filter is because it does a better job of filtering under most conditions than the paper filter supplied by the factory.
And that is reason enough for me to suggest you go with a K&N.

The proof of poor filtration can be seen in the
path from the filter(KN is more of a strainer)to the cylinders. Wipe the inside the housing or the
intake tube with a white towel and you'll see what is beng warned about. But, before you even
risk the damage, hold KN,yeh,KN up to the sunlight and watch the sun. Look at a paper ,$5 worth, and the fancy 'strainer' under a microscope
and see for yourself. Again, how much horsepower are you gambling with versus engine damage?

I don't care what kind of air filter you use, if you wipe the inside of the air intake with a white rag its going to look dirty. For every "scientific study" that shows K&N are crap there is a study that shows they work and work well. I can tell a difference in throttle response after the K&N install, even if its all in my head it makes me happy. Also, of course you will see more sunlight through a K&N filter, thats because it is less restrictive, that dosen't mean it dosen't filter as well.

I'm with md and jd. This thread is really humorous. I've racked up 850,000 miles on my commercial and family vehicles since 1985 using K&N air filters. The only time I use the paper filters is when K&N doesn't make that application. No engine rebuilds/ not one.

I have the K&N drop-in filter that goes in the stock air-box. Definitely made acceleration a little smoother and my miles per gallon is slightly improved.
I see no need for the FIPK. If you look at the dyno results on the K&N site for part number 57-1516, the results overlap until like 3200rpm-4800rpm range where it gets up to a 7hp increase. Not worth the $$$ tag on it. For those of you who have success with it....great.
I chose the drop-in for the re-use and better air flow. Like I said, no significant HP gains, never expected any, just a smoother running engine due to the better air-flow, and acceleration has improved. As for MPG, I got a slight increase, but don't expect do jump up 2 or more MPG from it.
