I was thinking about getting some 295/60/r16 tires for my 2003 4x4. It'll drop my 3.55 ratio to about 4.00. Has anyone tried anything like this?

Try this website:
http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp?action=submit

Those tires are 30 inches tall, the same height as your stock tires. You may drop your ratio to
3.59 if your lucky.

this is a 27.6 diameter tire and will drop my ratio to 3.96 from 3.55. I just want better acceleration is all.

You shouldn't have to go as radical as a 50 series tire to reduce the diameter. A 50 series that wide on a 8" wide wheel will wear prematurely in the center of the tire. Try 255/65/16 for 29", or try Tire Rack's site by putting in various combinations of 55/60/65 aspect ratios in 16". Click on the "specs" button to make comparisons.

Better make sure you can fit 295's on a 8" rim. Even if you do, it will wear prematurely like 01Motorsport said. I wouldn't even go that wide on my R/T and those are 9" wide rims. 255's are plenty for a 8" rim.
