Message: I dropped in a set of 3923's and accepted the 0.040" gap set by Autolight. Mileage dropped like a rock. Pinging wasnt much reduced, either. After about 2,000 miles, I regapped to the 0.035" suggested by Dodge. Things improved markedly.
Hope this helps.

Message: And I put mine at 040, cause I thought that's what dodge recommended.
I never have any pinging anyway, mileage is about the same, run's about the same. but at 37K, the stock Champions' electrodes had worn down some!
Maybe I'll regap at 035!
any other experiences?
And little Dak, you did gap the autolites to 040 right? Cause from the box, they're all over the place.

Message: Actually, because the 3923s are a colder plug most recommend that you gap them @ 0.035 instead of factory set of 0.040.

Message: In response to TexasTodd and in reference to Rob1:
The Autolight 3923's came out of the box already gapped to 0.040". But to be certain, I checked all the gaps before installing the plugs. The results I got from the 3924's, gapped to 0.040", were not spectacular. And after about 2,000 miles, I regapped them to the 0.035" suggested on the sticker under the hood and in the shop manusl for my Dakota. Consequently, performance, mileage and ping all improved a lot.
The 0.035" gap is suggested for the factory issued Champions that come with the truck. But from what I now infer, that gap is recommended for any plugs that can be employed. It seems that the gap is an important factor influencing emissions and fuel economy. While the temperature range of the plugs seems to be a factor influencing ping.

Message: Question...
Why do people seem to be yanking their stock plugs for these autolites?
I hope people don't think a "colder" plug means a colder running engine LOL!
Seriuosly, I really want to know the FACTS for this so called modification.
I have swapped previous vehicles to colder plugs than stock, however that was because I changed my compression from say 8.5 to 10.5 and the plug needed to run COLDER to prevent pre-detonation.
Other than that you should run the plug as hot as possible (with out pre detonation) to keep them from fouling if I'm not mistaken.
So basically, I'm guessing there is no reason to change our stock plugs to a colder one unless we do some SERIOUS internal engine mods (compression increase or supercharger, turbo charger).
I'm thinking that someone here got the idea to do this to their stock engine and now everyone (copy cats) are just doing it to display the plugs swap in their list of mods!
Please no flaming, but you don't know unless you ask, right???

Message: I changed mine due to slight pinging from the stock Champions. After I removed the stock Champions, I discovered that they were all gapped incorrectly from the factory (anywhere from .044" to .055"). I can't say whether or not it was the 3923's or the correct gap, but my truck WILL NOT PING under any of the conditions that I run it through now...and I've pulled my top end apart enough times in the past 6 months to check and see if there was any damage. Nothing but normal (actually, according to Blackstone Labs, less than normal) wear/damage...
I'm happy with my 3923's, but I am willing to try some different plugs and different gaps to play around.
