Subject: Completed the crank sensor timing mod IP: Logged
Message: I finished up this mod yesterday and it took 2 hours to complete. Some things left out in the instructions were where to disconnect the sensor harness from. This is up just behind the distributor, and there is another connector up there for something else. Not sure what it is for. Anyway, once that disconnected I could remove it from the truck and work on it. I used my Dremel to slot the holes and I probably got a total of 5/16" movement in the sensor. Since there is no way to measure the timing, I have no idea what it ended up being.
Before this mod, I could do burnout's but they weren't exactly easy to do. My mpg. was ~13.5 in the city. I don't know my new mpg. (if it changes), but I do know that burnout's are way easier than before.
Lastly, the other point these instructions fail to mention is that you must remove the right front wheel and fender liner to even get to the sensor. As a result, you will end up sacrificing the plastic rivets the first time. At least, I did. I didn't know how they removed so I just busted them trying to finish this mod in the one houre as stated. I spent ~$8 replacing the plastic rivets. No big deal.
I just wish all of this was included in the instructions.
Hope this helps someone else.
Thanks,
Kris

Are you experiencing any spark knock? How's your mileage? Trip any MILs?

Message: i just did this mod sun pm 3.9 club,01
like you said it took me 1hr to ascertain where the actuall sensor was. i was laid under my truck looking for it but i just took my air tube off n
cut my wrist to peices on the manifold cover, sloted holes, hardest was putting bolts back in
but ya cant see how much it has moved, i dont
want to risk slotting the holes any more as theres
not much meat leaft on the bracket
does any body know how much timing it will take
may be 5or6 degrees advance
and is it ok with out the gromet in there
did i need to re set the comp ?
but it does seem to be a little more responsive
but no burn outs from standstill ,worth every penny lol may be i,ll try the resistor mod next
or put my ported v8 tb back on [ported v6 on at moment] good luk

Message: Can you perform the crank sensor mod on a 94 Dakota? If so , how do you do it because the sensor is made a little differently on the 94? On the KRC site it shows how to do the mod on a 2000 model. Then states the mod can be performed on 92 and up models while the instructions will only work on 2000 and up models. Do you think that you can use a crank sensor for a 2000 model on a 94 Dakota?

Message: I stood on some blocks and was able to reeeeach
across from the top. Once you get the wrench on
the bolts it's easy to feel your way. I can get 40 degrees with the Mopar PCM. Runs best around 34-36 though. Runs 87 octane, 4400 lbs. 17-18 mpg. trucks with carbon build up may ping on 87.

Message: This is excellent information Wesb! About how far did you adjust your sensor then? Like I typed in my original post, I could only get ABOUT 5/16" adjustment. It would be nice knowing approximately how much I've adjusted mine.
On my next fillup, I'm putting in 87 octane fuel to see how things react to this change.
Thanks for the info.

Message: I did the mod on friday and it only took me about 1/2 an hour. I got it from up top. No removal of iner fender needed. Just reach down behind the head and its right there.

Message: Yes, looking back now I could have done it the same way. But, at the time, I wasn't exactly sure where it was nor did I even know the surrounding areas, where the wires went and ended up, etc. Your method, hopefully, can help others in the future do it quicker. I would have preferred that way...

Message: I noticed the shifts got firmer as well. There is a guy around here with a writen off rt that he is parting out, and as soon as I find out who and where im going to get the crank sensor from it. Im going to try to mod it to go under the bell housing. That way next time at the drags I can adjust between runs and see where it works the best.

This mod bumps your timing up a few degrees on 92 and later magnum engins.
you reach behind the pass side cylinder head on the deck of the engine block you will feel two half inch bolts about 3 1/2 inchs apart. They hold down the crank sensor bracket wich sits in a hole in the bell housing. After removing the bolts, you pull up on the bracket and out it comes. There is also a ruber gromet that the sensor sits in that has to be removed. The sensor wires plug in just behind the throtle body or a bit to the drivers side. After you remove the sensor slot the bracket holes so that the bracket can be moved down when reinstaled. Do not put the ruber gromet back in.
If you read my first post you will see that it was worth 2 tenths in the 1/4.
hope this helps you

Message: posts! MOTRSPRT, do you drive up many hills? I'm really curious to see if you end up with any detonation. Also, for any of you, could the bracket and grommet be purchased from the dealer and if the mod screwed anything up you could go back to stock?

Message: No detonation so far for me but I run 92 octane in my truck. Not sure if it would on regular. I live in Hamilton Ontario on Hamilton mountain so I drive up the hill every day. The bracket is part of the sensor Its all 1 piece. The gromet you could throw in your tool box and use it for when you deside to go back to stock. The gromet will hold it in its original place. Im sure you can buy the sensor from the dealer if you wanted to go that way. Thats why Im going to get this one from the write off that I mentioned before. I want to see how far I can go with out grinding the bell housing. Maybe make it adjustable.
Hope that helps

Message: I should also mention that when you have the sensor out look at it from the top as it sat in the truck. Slot both holes to the right(assuming your standing in front of the truck). that will alow you to slide the bracket towards the oil filter.

Message: Maybe so, but this is where this information all comes together, baby!! I've spent countless hours just searching this site for more details on this modification only to find very little. Other than the KRC writeup, and someone said you need to pull away the inner fender liner to get to it. For someone else, just this series of posts alone is enough to get it done.

If I can figure out how to use this pos digital camera I have I will take a couple of pics of the sensor and where to grind and email them to you. You will just have to wait till after this huricane blows through.
