Subject: MSD Ignition for the 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: I just got off the phone with a Tech at MSD and was talking to him about the product that they have out for the distributorless ignition system (DIS). There is only one problem. he said that it would work on the 4.7 but there was a note in the file for the 4.7. He said that you need 2 boxes. You need MSD DIS-2, PN 6211 $391.45 and MSD DIS-4, PN 6215 $427.56 plus you need 4 Tach adapters PN 8912 @ $58.99 each for a total cost of $1054.97 He also said thast there were no plans to make it easier for the 4.7l.

Message: The first tech I talked to didn't know what he was talking about the real part that the 4.7 owners need is MSD PN 7020 - $368.39 thats it and it will be released mid summer.

Message: So the 4.7L should have 4 coil packs, one for 2 cylinders. That would make the DIS-4 model the one we need. PN 6215. What is that other model and does it have the same features? I mainly want the 2 step rev limiter and the Ignition interrupt.

Chris - The 8-channel digital ignition was originally supposed to be out last October. Then it was supposed to be out at the first of the year. Then it was supposed to be out in March. Then June. I doubt it will ever make it to market! The only way they'll build it is if it's needed for a Mustang, Camaro or Honda.

Message: The kit is indeed the 7020. These are designed for the individual coil applications such as the 4.7 and may now be bought. KRC has been testing these for almost a year. I sent off an e-mail to them last week asking about the testing. According to them, they haven't even opened the box yet, so any hopes on getting some practial data right now might be usless. I'll be ordering one, so when I get it installed, I'll try to let everyone in on how it does.

Message: Stacker 7020 came on Wednesday. Since I'll be working thru Sunday, I'll puzzle out how to install it over the next few days. The only good place to mount the box, that I've come up with, is to put it on the wall outside of the battery. There would be need to only drill one hole, but it could only mount with two. I really don't feel like rearranging the engine compartment. The last MSD I had worked fine just wedged between my battery and the wall. Cables are about 1/3 the length they would need to be to reach the far side of the engine routing them back to the firewall and forward onto the engine block like the rest of the other cabling in the compartment. I need to find the same guage wiring and splice it. I also need to find out if the added line resistance will affect the performance of the box before I do that.
The ideal place to tap the MSD wires in would be near the ignition control box is. problem is I don't know where it is or what it looks like. I'm not used to working on these computerized vehicles. Then you could keep all the wires together, nice and neat. Since the positive side of all the coils are all tied together, I would like to find a nice central location to tap in the single positive coil wire. If anyone knows where the wire bundle ends up at the ignition control box, hook me up.

Message: Well, it's finally installed and running. It was a small pain to install. I had to go to the Dealership to get the wiring schematics. I installed the unit right next to the PCM. The guy at the dealer wanted to know why I wanted to install it. I told him 11 mpg highway isn't ideal. I wanted to try something to bring it up. Well, don't waste your money yet. No change to anything in my vehicle. I'm still pulling 11 mpg with no noticable gains anywhere else either. It may be I have other problems, but no D-C dealership has been able to figure it out yet. So there's my update.

Message: For all who have the 4.7L, listen up!
First off, get rid of that piece of crap fan clutch/fan assy. and install an electric that pulls at least 2800 cfm. Huge diff. in hp. Next, install NGK's R5672A-8 gapped at .055". If you install a stacker 7020, open gaps to at least .065".(Let me know the results : krisslaght@sbcglobal.net) The larger gaps require higher voltage to arc across(which is what the after market ignitions should be able to handle), so HIGHER energy in the form of heat. You won't see a difference if you leave the gaps stock! And most certainly get rid of champion plugs. I measured 8 plugs and got 8 different readings between 6,000 ohms all the way to over 90,000 ohms!!! This voltage drop results in low spark gap current, hence why non resistor plugs run so well. They're in a grounded cavity(head) so EMI/RFI noise is minimal. I'm hoping Granatelli and Accel come up with high voltage coil replacements(at least 50,000 volts). I'm also running an airraid intake system with S&B 6.5" conical filter(yes, better than K&N), airraid throttle body spacer, JBA headers, after cat exhaust with flowmaster muffler, 160 degree therm. I can get 28 mpg on a hot day if I keep under 65 on highway for extended drive.

Message: They most certainly do. If you are comparing to cast iron, stainless steel, copper, or any other highly conductive metal, aluminum is not as good, true. However, the metals properties will reduce electromechanical,radio frequency interference as compared to not being surrounded by the metal at all. I have not had any PCM/FM problems whatsoever. I've been running the non resistor plugs for over 65,000 mi., changed them once at a 50k interval. I will never run resistor plugs on this engine again.

Message: 28.4 from Madera, Ca. to Grover Beach, Ca. I drive the sport Durango, by the way. And that was calculated from filling in Madera(I always run 87 octane; more power per volume), and driving to Grover Beach, then re-filling and dividing the amount to refill into the number of miles traveled on odometer. I'm running 16" rims with 70R Geolanders, so I know my odometer reads low, as well. You can believe what you want to believe. I didn't post to brag or impress. I posted to try and help others because I know what the dealers pull, and I know what has and is working for me. I'm not getting rid of my suv because gas prices are so high. I'm continually looking for ways to get better milage and performance. And I don't mind sharing what I find. If you don't believe what I've told others and the whole world to read, then don't follow my recommendations. I did neglect to mention that I've been running mobile 1 since I reached 3k miles, which was 98k miles ago. And the day I got over 28 mpg, I was also running Tuff Oil. Incredible stuff. I also run synthetic in the front and rear diff.'s as well. Believe what you want to believe.

Message: Copper does not attenuate EMI or RFI.
Copper and Aluminum are not ferrous metals. They are electrically conductive, of course, and a moving electromagnetic field will induce currents in the metal, but these metals will not affect magnetic or electromagnetic fields.
Your PCM has EMI/RFI shielding built-in.
Next time you're on the road, listen to your engine on your AM radio off-station around 1500KHz.

Message: You are confusing magnetic shielding , which does take into account the permeability of metals and their ability to pass magnetic lines of flux, with electromechanical/radio frequency interference shielding, where Faraday shielding is utilized. There are numerous types of Faraday shields, cages, etc. utilizing various metals, including copper and aluminum.
The noise you hear on AM(AMPLITUDE MODULATION) is the noise generated from alternator brush noise. No matter how much shielding there is, even a decent am radio with decent selectivity is going to pick up this noise. I had it before I switched to non resistor plugs, and the amplitude and volume did not change when I switched. That was one of my first tests.
