Subject: Dropping in a 340 or 440 IP: Logged
Message: I've seen this done on a couple of the early 90s daks, but not in the current ones. How hard would it be to take the 4-banger out of my truck and drop in a 340 or 440 with six-pack carb setup? I'm really interested in doing this down the road when my current engine dies (it will give me a good excuse)

Message: Damn, those 400's ran forever and from my experience turned some better RPM's than a stock 360!
Years ago my dad had a '76 1 ton crew cab Dodge BEAST with the 400. It had just a big RV cam and headers. The guy who sold it to him had allready removed the 4 Barrel carb and used a two barrel intake and carb when he got mad at it so we never changed it. It was my dad's work truck. I did remove the P.O.S. Dodge 2 barrel and used a Ford motorcraft after I got pist at the dodge one.
ANyway, that f**ker rapped up QUICK and would spin the tires on that LSD Dana rear end!
It went 300,000 miles before he sold it. It was just then starting to smoke from the rings.
I bet those would run great with some mods especially some porting and polishing, balancing and a SIX PACK. Just thinking of that makes you get a woody! Even the smaller 383 or the bigger 413 and 440!
I think Dodge big blocks are bad a$$!

Message: I just think the six-pack looks nice. Maybe I'll just go with 4-barrels until a while down the road. My truck is a 55,000 miles now, and I haven't had any trouble from it. Hope it stays that way until I get some money together. Anyone know how much a new driveshaft and dana rear end would be?

Message: there was a new edelbrock 6 pack manifold on ebay yesterday... i was thinking about getting it ($190) but same performance as a tuned 4 bbl... plus the 6 would be a tuning nightmare.

Message: hmmm...I didn't think about tuning...hell, I don't know how to tune a 4-barrel, much less 6. My dad does though, so that'll save me. He did his own muscle car thing back when he was my age. I'm thinking about a 340 right now, but I'm wondering if those rear gears will be strong enough to hold the power and put it to the ground. Maybe until I at least get enough together again to buy a dana?

Message: yeah, when i am done the weakest link on my truck should be the 8.25" rear end. It should grenade rather quickly. And when it does... time for a bigger one.
