Subject: Need info from 4.7 4x4 quad owners! Please! IP: Logged
Message: Ok I test drove a 4x4 club cab with the 4.7 and what the dealer said were 3.55 gears (a little box above MPG figures with tow and capacity rating said 3.55 so I assume that is what the truck had.). WOW, FAST TRUCK!! I ask the dealer if with the extra weight of the quadcab if I should go with the 3.90s. Since I dont tow or haul alot, except ass!, he thought I should stay with 3.55s for better milage and top end. What do you guys with these turn for RPMs at 55 and 65 MPH in OD with either of these gears? Do you think the truck I drove actually had the 3.55s? I did not take a RPM to MPH reading to verify the gears. Any and all info is appreciated! The 4.7 KILLS the 5.9!

Message: GET THE 3.90"s It adds 300 rpm and lets you go down the road 70 mph @2300rpm.

Message: I have a 2000 4x4 Quad 4.7 w/ 3.55 gears. In general the gearing is perfect. 60 mph at about 1700-1800 rpms. Mileage on recent long trip was 18.5 mpg (driving conservatively). Truck hauls ass when I want it too and sips the fuel for long drives.
If you get a 4.7 get a Z-tube and filter for it too! Love the racecar sound and power it provides under hard acceleration.

Message: I would get the 3.90's. I have a quad cab 4x4 with 3.55's. I needed my truck that day so I took what they had. Nothing feels better than a set of tall gears in a truck. :D
I had 4.10's in my 99 Sliverado, but we won't talk about that lemon.

Message: I tow a boat that weighs 5k lbs and the limit on the window sticker say 4800 for the 3.55 gears. Yeah the 3.90 att 300 RPM's but when towing with the overdrive off with the 3.55 you have a broader power band. Unless you tow everyday get the 3.55 for the milage.

Message: Or if you plan to lift the truck and put bigger tires on it go with the 3.92 gears. I put a 6" lift and 35" tires on my F150 with the stock 5.0 V8 and 3.55 gears. It was not happy with the setup! 3.92 gears will work good with 33" tires or so.

Message: Gentlemen,
I have a 2000 QC 4X4 with the 4.7L V8 & 3.5 gears. I would like to get the 3.92 gears for more low end. Was wondering if anyone has done this & what the costs might be? Any comments on the idea?

Message: Get the 3.55:1. It is about the best overall comprimise that you can get with this truck. The 3.92 gears are not going to offer enough mechanical advantage to off set the decrease in gas miliage. If you were talking about doing alot of rock crawling or working this truck at a yard I would say go with 4.10:1. I have the heavy duty towing package and I have 3.55:1. I think my Quad Cab is pretty fast and I get 15.7 Mpg aroound town and 19 Mpg on the freeway at 75 Mph.
