Subject: RE: IAT mods IP: Logged
Message: i have been thinking of doing this aswell, i have just put a intake on but it still seem to just pull air of the hot engine during the day but not at night. sould i maybe construct a heat shield between the air filter and the engine, before i do the iat adjustment.
also if you replace the spark plugs to a colder range does this do the same thing as putting a resistor on the iat or moving the iat.
thanks for the help

Message: I ran my tube thru a 3 inch hole I drilled down behind the passenger side headlight and ran my intake filter behind the front bumper.
That is harder to do, but much better than using a heat shield or worse yet, removing the flap next to the radiator.
The spark plugs have nothing to do with it. The plug design (depth of tip, etc) changes how well the plug gets cooled from the water circulating in the heads, or something like that anyway. Basically you need a hot enough of a plug to not foul. That's why on OLDER worn engines that have lossed compression (and smoke!) you run a HOTTER plug to help burn off the excess oil, etc and prevent some of the plug fouling. But witha good compression engine a HOTTER plug would just cause pre-ignition (igniting the fuel mixture too early) which would be bad. High compression engines run COLDER plugs. But temp range on plugs have NOTHING to do with the intake air temp or the IAT sensor.
I'm no expert, but that's my knowledge from a few years.

Message: GraphiteDak;
Relocating your IAT will make a positive difference in HP. I proved that to myself on a dyno. Do a search and checkout my post "Dyno results for 4.7L" on the V8 board. I feel sure what you are doing will make a difference also, you may have to put it on a dyno though to see how much.
Good luck to you!

FLDak, are you refering to the IAT that was OEM installed into the intake plenum (aluminum)?
My '03 Dak came with the plastic intake (of course) and the IAT was allready downstream in the inatke tube.
Mine isn't too far further downstream than it was but I have the inline resistor to adjust for the intake.
I don't know of any Dyno around here. But I will notice results when I pull my Quads up the same monster mountains I frequent. I still usually pass a lot of slow people,

Message: GraphiteDak,
That's right the 03 are in the tube already.
Yeah mine was in the intake manifold so I bought another one (with threads) and installed it just behind my K&N filter on the end of my CAI tube, 360 intakez. Then just extended the wires to it. Between dyno runs I switched the connector from the orginal IAT to the relocated one and gained about 5HP.

Message: Simple instructions please. I have a 2002 4.7 automatic trans, with the K&N FIPK GEN 2. Can someone please give me simple instructions on how to relocate the IAT. Also, if someone can provide instructions on removing the clutch fan as well.

Message: Where is your IAT sensor at now. I don't know the difference in 2002 to 2003 but I know my sensor was in a plastic housing and just snapped into my OEM plastic intake tube from the factory. I know the older ones were the thread in type in the aluminum intakes like with the 318/360 engines.
Anyway after instakking my new intake tubing I drilled a hole in the back side of my tubing about the size of the sensor. Then I pushed the sensor into the hoke which was snug enough to hold it in place.
The I had to cut and extend the leads to the sensor. All you need is some small gauge wires to extend it over to the new location.
It's just a thermistor. There is no polarity so it doesn't matter what wire goes to what lead.
If you want to and while you're extending the leads, you can solder in a small resistor in line with one of the wires to increase the resistance of the circuit. This will tell the computer it is colder than it really is and adjuct the fuel slightly richer. a 2.2k to 3.3k is usually plenty.
The IAT chart is HERE

Message: Please excuse me for being a rookie. I think, based on what I have read, the IAT on my 02 must be on the manifold because I didn't see it on the intake tube I removed months ago. I realize this topic has been discussed a million times, however I just need some simple, basic instructions.
Also, I did a research on the clutch fan removal and there were a lot of procedures posted. I've got it figured out, except clockwise or counter clockwise on the nut? That's it - I hope this doesn't stir up a bunch of trash.

Message: Two things on this topic:
1) I have an 03 V6 and my sensor is in the #2 runner NOT the intake pipe.
2) If my plan is to get superchips tuner anyway is there really a point to this mod? I mean it would seem that the tuner is going to do the job of retuning the fuel mixture and advancing the timing. So is there any need to do this mod along with a tuner?

Message: Yeah i just wanted to know do i have to undo my battery for this mod to work because i have a lot of opther stuff hoooked up that i would have to reset if i unhook my battery and if i dont habve to do thatr i would really be happy and i have a 2000 civic si dohc vtec 1.6 litre and i have heard of people using 50k resistors and having great turn outs so try that. By the way you cant hurt your engine with this stuff so dont be scared to go balls to the wall with this mod and try some crazy stuff. the 50k is the best way to go though.
