Subject: Electric Fan Thermostat IP: Logged
Message: Ok here we go... I've had an electric fan for a while now. Long before my trip to Iraq, and now Im having a issues with the electric fan thermostat. It seems to get warmer than when originally installed. So I purchased an adjustable thermostat and installed it a little different this time. I put the e-tstat in the radiator hose from the front of the radiator going up into the hose. Anyone familiar with the Imperial Adj. Thermostat knows the guage of metal strand used. I then clamped the hose down with new metal hose clamps, and took for a test drive. It was a bust. The hose had a slight leak going so I cant do that any ideas? Only serious post please

Message: I had a '92 3.9 dak w/msd,catback,mopar perfomance computer, throttle body,K/N intake, and electric fans;one for the a/c condenser and one for the radiator. I used a 180 degree fixed that went in the radiator fins just below the cap. It worked fine for 5 years. From 92'000miles-148,000miles till I sold it to a friend and got a quadcab.I had no problem at all with the fan thermostat. I got it at Discount Auto Parts right off the shelf.I live in SW fla. it worked fine. Also if you have an auxilary trans cooler not connected to radiator, the fan must be on all the time. I almost lost my warranty on my decked out trans I had modified. My tranny guy said that at a stoplight if the fan is not on, you will shorten the life of your trany dramatically, because the fluid heats up very fast. To keep your trany working ok try and keep the air flowing though the auxillary trany cooler Hope this helps,Jsst

Message: So then does that mean that trucks w/o tranny coolers do not heat up as much? Your tranny guy is not making sense.

Message: I'm curious about this too. I'm wanting to put a Flex-a-lite fan in and replace the stock one. Where would you put the temp reading for the fan at? I can see if you put it in rad hose you could end up with some leakage. Or is there a temp sensor you can splice off of?
Wouldn't want any other!

Message: I just put a Black Magic fan on my Dak, it has a sensor that you push in betweem the radiator fins next to the upper radiator hose. I put mine about 6" below the hose on the left side of the radiator.

Message: Doesn't seem like to me you'd get an accurate reading from the fins. I would want the fluid temp, not a combination of metal and air temp.
Wouldn't want any other!

Message: TimG, that sensor is supposed to go as close as possible to the inlet of the radiator to get the most accurate reading.
I have had my Black Magic installed for about 8 months now and the sensor appears to work perfectly fine. It's crude, but really effective.
You are correct, it's not as accurate as it could be, but that's why there is a switch for adjustments on it. I have mine set to come on shortly after the thermostat opens. As long as it's opening shortly after your thermostat, who cares how accurate the sensor is. It's coming on when it's supposed to and that's what matters. Don't worry so much about all the numbers, the function of the unit is what's important.
Your actual temps are 190 degrees.
The fan is reading only 160 degrees.
So set the fan to turn on at 160.
When the engine is 190 and the fan always reads 160 you have a consistency. That is what we should be concerned with.

Message: Not a dumb question.
You know the thermostat is open when the hose is warm on the radiator side.
It's honestly just a bit of trial and error. If your fan is running all the time, more than it should, it's probably set too low. Then it will be comming on when your truck is running at normal operating temperature. Then adjust it untill it only turns on when it's supposed to.
You can also use the truck's temp. needle to get a good idea where you'll be setting it to I guess.
The Black Magic's default setting is 180 degrees ,I think, when you turn it as far as it goes to one side. So you just turn it a bit from there and you're good.

Message: Does anyone know of a temp switch that will screw into the manifold and turn the A/C fan on arouns 190-195F? Seems like a stock swicth would work well to control a relay. I don't want a sensor that sends out a variable voltage, but a switch that closes at 195F. The M1 intake has an extra port right next to the temperature sensor. This would be the ideal setup. I am not too keen on sticking a probe between the fins of the radiator - too hackish for me (wlthough I'm sure it works).

Message: It was totally worth it. Every truck I own I would be sure to add the RAS to it. It has only been through two summers and a winter (with 350 pounds of traction sand in the back), but it still looks perfectly fine and works the same as day 1.

Message: Hard to comment on that. I didn't drive my Hotchkis without the RAS very long.
Hotchkis made a bigger difference for lateral sway, but the RAS really shows off when you're carrying a load. I'd say they both did about the same to fight wheel hop.
The rear is very stiff now, I wish I could stiffen up the front a bit more now.
