Subject: Antifreeze problem? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys Ive been reading posts on this site for awhile and have learned a great deal about my 2000 dakota! Anyways lately Ive been smelling antifreeze after I drive and hearing a sound coming from the engine that sounds like water dripping on a hot frying pan? I here this sound for only a few secounds after I shut the truck off. Also there are no liquids under the truck, so it doesent appear to be a antifreeze leak. Also I feel that I am defintly going through alot of antifreeze lately. Does anybody know any "tests" I can do to figure this one out? please let me know.

Message: Check one of the hoses that run above the exhaust manifold. It sounds like it is leaking onto the manifold and creating the sound you hear. The hot exhaust manifold then evaporates the leaking water so that when you look you cannot see any liquid. This would cause you to loose your antifreeze.

Message: I had the exact same problem until the leak grew large enough for me to find easily. There was a thin slit in my bypass hose. This is a small (about 3-4") length of hose that runs between your water pump and I think the block or intake manifold. This hose had a small slit that when the coolant got really hot or a lot of pressure built up in the coolant system it would force coolant out at a very small rate, just slow enough so I could smell it. However, it would evaporate straight out of the hose so I would never find any coolant. You have to take a few accesories off to get to it, but its not bad.
