Message: Hello Group,
I've got a '90 Dakota, 3.9L 5spd, 4x4, with 130K miles. I'm looking for advice on how to increase the horsepower.
I've read several threads here on the site and going to a bigger engine, which seems to mean going to a bigger transmission, new wiring harness, new computer etc, seems to much for me (I don't know dick about cars/trucks...there, I've said it..)
Question 1: Is there a bigger engine that would increase the performance that wouldn't require 6wks and thousands of dollars?
Question 2: What could I do to my current engine to boost the performeance?
Thanks for your time and patience.

Message: Have you considered trading your truck in on one with the bigger motor? That would be considerably cheaper than replacing all of the hardware on your truck, and you could probably get something with fewer miles on it.
Just a thought.

Message: Yep,
I've thought of that...I just hate making payments, and I thought I could learn some something during the process. I've got some buds who are well skilled around motors.

Message: Well, then the best place to start is by opening up the intake and exhaust systems. There is a saying that an engine is basically just an air pump, and the more air that you can get through it, the more power it will make. Look for a cold air intake system, bigger throttle body, headers, and cat back exhaust systems.
After that, you could look at reprogramming the PCM. I believe there are a few options on this for your motor.
Next, you would have to get into the internals of your motor with things like camshafts, ported heads, higher compression pistons, etc.
After that, if you still need to go faster, you could get into things like superchargers and nitrous oxide.
Check out www.dakota-durango.com in their parts section. This is a good place to see what is available.
Good luck, and have fun.

Message: Rush...
Take a crack at selling your truck. You said you would be willing to spend $3000 at the most? Sell yours for a $1000 to get rid of it quick and look for a lower mileage v8 4x4 in the mid 90's. I've seen them on eBay for around $3000, then take your extra $1000 and go nuts... PCM, exhaust, trans kit and intake should about eat it up. I picked up a 94 Sport with a 318 and 88000 miles for $3500 in awesome shape!

Message: JZ,
Thank for the tips!
I've been looking at stuff all night. I've yet to come across a manufacturer who builds parts for a '90 model (air intake system, throttle body spacer, etc...), but I'll keep looking.
Thanks again for your time!
